I love working with aluminum.  So when a friend posted a picture of a glass table top sitting on two lockers because the table frame had been broken I told him I would make him something.  It might take a little time, full plate, old age, and all that. This friend is an awesome attorney in Dallas.  He gave up private practice to become director of a non profit that assists victims of persecution in other countries navigate our immigration system.  The table will be in a small break room and I wanted it to be something that would maybe offer a calming distraction that wouldn't need verbal explanation.I'm about half way done with it and I thought that some of you here might appreciate the pleasure I get from working the metal.  There's almost a zen like experience making little kinks into different bends.half by one aluminum bar stock, Hossfield hydraulic bender, Lincoln 205 a/c-d/c tig with no pedal and air cooled torch Attached ImagesLast edited by wroughtn_harv; 02-14-2014 at 11:09 PM.life is good
Reply:Nicely done! How much time do you have in it?GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:That represents about six hours work and a lot of thought simmering.  I like to think out a project like this one and then start with an end in mind but allow the project to navigate.  It's not the way most people work but it works for me.  I like bending metal and I don't like straight lines.  My adopted son says I make everything on a curve so that no one can check my work for square.  He might be right. The interesting part on this was getting it jigged up and welded with the top and feet parallel.  I have some 1 1/2" steel tube that fit perfect inside the 1 5/8" aluminum pipe.  That made it easier and that's why posted the picture of the table on the table upside down.Yes, that's the Miller table.  We got lucky and that's one of the rewards of being lucky, thanks Miller.Last edited by wroughtn_harv; 02-14-2014 at 11:37 PM.life is good
Reply:I work things out much like you do, make a plan, start building, change the plan. One difference is that i tend to see things in straight lines, maybe i should follow you lead on the curves - square is often a pipe dream for me. Reply:I think Lily will love her table.  Sorry bad joke!  Hey, I appreciate the work you do, very nice!  Aluminum is great to work with, isn't it!  Hope to do more with it in the near future.  Been making duck and crane sculptures out of sheet metal, 24 gauge, and though it is thin, it still requires persuasion to conform to the image I want it to be with my persuader, some times a 5 pound hammer. Please post a picture later on when it is installed in the office with the glass top.  And tell you adopted son, he has discovered my secret.  In art the curves are for us (me not you) who can't square things up!Some kind of Big Blue constant current welding machineAnother smaller yet, Blue machine (it's got wire in it)
