Reply:Hard to explain this bud but here goes. Put the rod in the stinger on a 90. Start at 6 o clock and when you start hitting around 7 o clock start rotating your wrist to square back up to 90 for the rest of the vert up till you get back to flat. I hope i explained it correctly. Roll the wrist around 7 o clock and work your way back to a 90. Same goes for downhill, just reversed. Hard to explain but i know you're a fart smeller and will understand.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:If the pipe is at room temperature when you start welding, the bead will be " colder", and gradually smoothen out as the base metal temperature increases due to welding. Also, you are dealing with gravity, here. So, the bead profile will be more convex on the overhead and vertical portions, then, the profile of the bead will flatten out as you approach the top of the pipe.Could you handle a few more amps at the start of a new bead, then perhaps reduce the amps when you stop to reposition, or grab another rod? This may help keep things consistant.Rich

Reply:Sometimes it is easier to learn doing bottoms by sticking the rod in the end of the stinger straight up. On pipe try starting at five o'clock and draw rod towards you going uphill. The starts should overlap each other, don't start in the same spot. Sometimes if allowed, touch up the tacks with a grinder and feather edge them. It may help throwing the stinger cable over the pipe and making a half hitch to rest your arm in. Some guys will tack a piece of all thread rod to the pipe instead as a rest. If you are laying a ditch doing a bellhole where the operator didn't want to dig as deep as you wanted him to the ground works well for support. OR, you could just do tops only.

Reply:Another method that we use when pipe welding is the back-step method. For example, weld the 5:00 to 7:00 segment. Then, weld the 11:00 to 1:00 segment.(Achieve this however you are allowed to. We are not allowed weld downhill more than 15 degrees, so I'd have to go from 11:00 to 12:00 and from 1:00 to 12:00 to achieve this...)Now, to connect those 2 segments, go from 9:00 to 11:00, 3:00 to 1:00, 7:00 to 9:00, and 5:00 to 3:00.This is fairly important to do when welding pipe in the 5G and 6G positions, so that the pipe doesn't c0ck upward. We tig all of our pipes. It's a slow process, and ends up putting quite a bit of heat into the pipe, so if we don't back-step, the pipes will certainly c0ck.RichLast edited by steelsurgeon; 05-10-2015 at 09:02 AM.
Reply:With the antique helmet, (looks like the Monty Python clip), I'm surprised you could find the stinger! An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.
Reply:Well there's the problem right there. CEP in his haste forgot to put on his Pipeliner helmet.  How can you expect to do a nice pipe weld without the right helmet? Oh these amateur hobbyists thinking they're (pipe) welders.
Reply:Originally Posted by CEPThat’s a good idea! But wait a minute, wouldn’t the pipe leak on the bottom?

Reply:If I were you I would bring the pipe down to mid section height. I personally like it like this because when I weld the bottom side I can rest my forearm against the pipe with a glove and hold my rod much more steady. With you trying to hold the rod steady and bending down at the same time your abs and legs will tremble from breathing. I had the trouble with consistency on the bottom side when welding in position in the past. I also don't use the rod pointing straight up and down. I put it in the side at a 45* angle and hold the rod in between my left fingers and let is slowly slide through as it burns and I progress upwards. I also make sure my progression upwards is consistent by playing it out. Hold the rod like I said, act like your going up the side and see how far you can get without having to reposition. Trial and error. Just like when your using a cutting torch. You have to steady yourself. I have high Blood pressure which makes me shaky sometimes. Practice makes perfect. I got a job offer to go back offshore with me old company welding pipe. I will have to make a video sometime soon to explain.Last edited by AndrewDavenport89; 05-12-2015 at 11:01 AM.
Reply:That would be great Andrew, love to see a video of you welding pipe.I normally leave the pipe right down on top of the vice, and squat down to make the bottom half weld. I raised the pipe up like that for the picture.
