This is my current project. I am a hobby welder that lives in a apartment, and have a small garage so everything needs to be compact. This is a work in progress so over next few weeks will post the pics as it progresses. The plan is to make a several shelves on the bottom of the table to hold my cutoff saw, drill press and grinders plus some storage for blocks ect. Still in the design stage is the wheels I am going to put on it so it can be moved easily. Also included in the pics is the Alternator Welder I built. It works good on 6011 3/32 rod. Still need to paint and install some guards on the belts and a permanent place to put the cords. Gas powered welder is required as I am really not supposed to be using the Electricity in the garage (managed to tag into the garage door opener for a outlet for the power tools). So stay tuned for the next round of pics.......Attachment 633961 Attached Images

Reply:No I have a small 110/220volt Chinese buzz box. All the welding I do for the forseeable future will be with the Alternator welder as 'lectricity is a issue.
Reply:Here is some progress on the table. I threw in a piece of plywood just so I could see how it is going to work on the top shelf. Going to end up with some expanded metal for the top 2 shelves. It is about 80 percent done. Still want to do some cover passes on some of the welds...............some look very bad. Welder gave me fits today, it would weld perfect then next run the arc was doing the two step all over the place. Not sure if it was the metal I was working with or I am just a crappy welder (bet it was the crappy welder part). Friend gave me about 20 bed frames and that has been being some cheap building materials.Pics will be posted soon as I can get them off of the phone.

There might come a time when you may need to use it where there is no 120v available to run power tools. You should add a few wheels to it too, to make moving it around easier.Next you could start going on some pipeline jobs with it.
Reply:Look like your tensioner pulley is not correct. Is the v going in the grove?Idealarc 250AC 225SVictor OA-older made in USA stuff. And a crap ton of other stuff.
Reply:It is a flat idler pulley and I have the belt running on the back side. The idler is also on the slack side of the belt so that helps keeps it tight. There is not much belt tension due to plenty of belt wrap on the pulleys. So far there hasn't been any issues with that part of the welder.I had to replace the belt after the first time running it. Didn't notice the spring sliding into the belt and that chewed up it up good. Took care of that issue and came back with a wrapped belt and have not had any belt slippage or odd wear on the belt.Last edited by Ruyen; 03-06-2014 at 06:56 PM.Reason: Failed English
Reply:Looks neat. Did you see this post on the $59 HF welding table ? Might be something handy for your situation. http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...=1#post3815811
Reply:Impressive. Don't kill yourself with the electricity. I'd like to see where this goes. Regards,RobGreat Basin WeldingInstagramBlue weldersRed weldersMy luscious Table DIY TIG Torch cooler
Reply:I am very impressed with the ingenuity to make a alternator welder. I would have never thought about that. Have you tried any other rods like 7018. If you can run the 6011 as a first pass and go over it with 7018 you should be able to make some nice welds. Just be careful putting to much heat at once. I'm gonna keep an eye on this thread to see how it goes. |
