Welding vertical Hobart 6011 5/32 rods, With a Miller Syncrowave 200

Most of my vertical stuff has been with 3/32. Recently a farmer friend had a job for me that will require 5/32 rod,  welding 3/4 thick stuff to 1/2 thick material.Before I weld something like this I haven't welded in a long time, I take scrap from the project and practice to see how it goes. Horizontally, I used about 160 amps and it flowed well with very little undercut. Vertically it was a disaster and the metal flowed out of the weld pool like snot on a wintery day. Looks like stalactites in a cave. So I turned the amps down to about 130 and found it to go much better. Is this normal with you Pro's to see this much of a variation in amperage between horizontal and vertical? Reply:I'm no expert but would short beads help.  I know my dad burns 1/8 6011 like its going out of style and runs that around 120 to 130
Reply:Well I'm no pro, and far from an expert, but WOW! That all seems so hot to me. But every machine is different. When welding vertically up hill with 6010 or 11 I run a flat bottom U. If I get in trouble I make the legs of the U longer, before coming back down for the fill on the bottom of the U. This is 5/32-inch 6010 on 6-inch pipe, 5-G. Run at 95-amps. Reply:I run 5/32 6010's at 120 amps for up, down and flat. On another note though, if your welding almost any kind of farm equipment, you should use 7018's. Much of it is higher carbon steel and all of it gets stressed to the max. The larger elongation factor of the 7018 really helps with steels that get that kind of a work out.
