More practice. I am having trouble with the lap joints. I tried pushing, without any pattern, and just letting the wire fill in, as suggested. Not getting the hang of it yet. The last lap was pulling, with cursive "e" movement. That one seemed to come out the best of the four. These are in reverse order: the one at the bottom was my first attempt, the one at the top was my last.Miller Multimatic 255

Reply:Not bad. Try circles next. Play with the heat a bit. Your very close. Your metal is getting warm on you(a little). When you bobble up and hit the square corner it melts quick. Invest in a 350* tempstick. Inch or so from the bead mark it. If it doesn't melt weld some more. Reply:See how the bead face changes angle as the weld progressed? See the uneven toes of the bead? Settle down. Tune out from the world. Watch the work angle and the drag/push angle to keep uniformity, and fill each puddle (if you do puddles) to the same full height. If you want a new challenge, try a no frills straight push, or straight pull with no manipulation.Consistency.City of L.A. Reply:In the first pics (lap joint) keep weld size less than the thickness of the plate. 1/4" plate, 3/16" fillet for example. If you burn off the top edge, it is considered undercut, and could be rejected if it is a qualified joint and inspected .

Reply:Top one is the best of the bunch. I do still see some inconsistencies so you need to keep working on these. Travel speed and gun motion pop out as the biggest inconsistencies that I see right now.You said these were all  "push", but I see beads starting on both the left and the right. That says to me either some were pushed and some dragged, or you are switching direction of travel for some reason. If right handed, for right now just push right to left and keep things simple.I'd agree with Dave about keeping the bead below the top edge, but that gets to be tough to do when the material drops below say 1/4" for many new guys. I'm happy if the top edge is nice smooth and even. 1st and 2nd laps at the top are close. 1st one could be a bit more even and smooth. It should still look like a nice straight line and the edge should be nice and smooth. 2nd one you are just below the edge of the plate, but you've got a few spots that could have filled a tiny bit more. Keeping the original edge is good, but it takes a lot of control to do that with material as it gets thinner.Fillets need more work. They are quite inconsistent. I'd up the voltage a bit more if you can. That would help wet in the toes a bit better from what I see. Again travel speed and motions are inconsistent. Eventually you'll learn to see and read the puddle. I don't stick to one set motion. I use what works best for the joint I'm working on based on what I see the puddle doing.  Motions are just an easy way to get guys to do the correct moves until they gain the information to do it the other way. I get asked in class all the time why I weld differently from the way the other instructor suggests guys weld. He suggests the circular or "e" motion because the majority of guys need to slow down and this motion helps them do that. I try and explain that one motion doesn't always work for all people, joints or positions. I seldom weld in an "e" or circular motion with mig, though I can do it. I often do a demo where I'll start out doing an "e" motion, then changes to "c"s followed by changing to a straight no motion weld. When done they all look the same and most times you can't even see where I switched while continuing the weld nonstop. You need to find what works best for you..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Look like you need to work on a more consistant travel path, not bad at all.Remember slow and steadyNot fast a ****ty!
Reply:Thanks for the input guys. Now I have to fire up the torch and cut some of these coupons apart so I can weld them back again  Miller Multimatic 255
