Let me start out by saying I have only tig welded twice and now that I have access to a DC stick welder I would like to get my own scratch start tig set so here it goes, I know I need an argon bottle, regulator, filler rod,and tungsten but what torch do I need and whats the best way of getting it? I know i need an air cooled torch i'm really looking for one like Lanse has but would it be better to buy a used one or buy new? what size torch would i need for a 180 amp welder? please keep in mine I don't plan on using all 180 amps for a prolonged time. I would like to have some basic info next time I call the LWS because last time I called them I sounded like a complete dumbass so thats probably why they said they their busy so can anyone help me?Lincoln pro core 125 14''chop saw7 inch grinder,2-4.5 inch grinders, electric die grinder.Half inch drillAnd alot of hand tools
Reply:You need a tig torch that has a gas valve on it. A 150 amp air cooled torch is more than plenty for you. I like the CK Worldwide tig torches myself. I have a flexloc model right now. You will also need a power block adapter to connect the torch to a weld cable that connects to your welderI use a 3/32 tungsten for most of my work. Once in a while I will go down to a 1/16 tungsten for smaller low amp work. In that case, I have to install a 1/16 collet in the tig torch to properly hold the 1/16 tungsten.Last edited by snoeproe; 01-23-2014 at 08:04 PM.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:#17 air cooled torch 150amp with a valve on it. Like Snoeproe said, you will need a power block also. When you go to the LWS tell them what you are trying to do and I'm sure they will help find the things you need. There is a thread about scratch start setup but I don't remember what it was called.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:I'd get something like this, with a power lug. Take the torch to your LWS and buy everything else. http://www.ebay.com/itm/TIG-Torch-SR...item27a884cbb4 Attached ImagesDont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Does that torch come with the power lug? If it doesn't will my local welding supply have power lugs? The price on that torch on Ebay isn't bad honestly.Lincoln pro core 125 14''chop saw7 inch grinder,2-4.5 inch grinders, electric die grinder.Half inch drillAnd alot of hand tools
Reply:Your welding supply will have everything you need. If I'm not mistaken that's the same torch Lance got. If my welding supply talked to me like yours did, I'd be looking for a new welding supply!Dont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Instead of gripping the power block with a tong type stick electrode holder, I attach a piece of welding cable to the block and have a short pig tail coming off it. At the end on the cable I have a tweco style connector that attaches to my welder. All my cables and my welder are all tweco connections.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:I went to Praxair and bought almost all of the things I need like a the actual torch, power lug, and hose connector. I'm still in need of a bottle, regulator, collect, collet body, and some filler rod but I would like to say thank you for everyone helping me out.
