Just for giggles.  If I were to weld 3/4" I beam, do y'all think it could be done with a 230v buzz box or small 230v mig with multiple passes?  Opinions please. Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkLincoln 175Monkey Wards 230v.  Stick
Reply:absolutely on both options.
Reply:What kind of question is that?Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Trump/Carson 2016-2024
Reply:Finding 3/4" I-Beam might be the bigger problem.
Reply:Why not 110 volt mig? Just kidding everyone.   how many amps are the welders? They do make 140 amp 220 volt welders that might not be enough.
Reply:I'm looking through all my books for  "3/4" I beam"Is that a typo or are you drunk?
Reply:Isn't a 3/4 I beam really a T, C or =?
Reply:I built my first truck frame rack using a combination of 5/8", and 3/4" flange thickness beams with my Lincoln AC-225S, and Millermatic 200 never breaking it apart under stresses of up to 40 tons of hydraulic force applied to truck frames so I would say yes. Going to take a lot time to do properly, but it can be done.SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....
Reply:I got a 12'' x 40 beam from job that was used with trolley and chainfall. General contractor was gonna scrap it but said I could have it. I had to cut the 24' beam in half just to get it home that day in my truck. Welded it together and have had it in barn shop for 30 plus years with a trolley and electric chainfall. Welded it with my Miller Thunderbolt.Chainfall is one ton and I did lift some tractor weights right at that. Just make sure you know your limitations.

Reply:Here is the question as it was posed to me. "Do you do work on a 3/4" steel I-beam?"I asked the question after I said I couldn't. Then I thought about the half inch cutting edge I put on a tractor. With several passes of course.  I did that with my Lincoln 175 and .035 flux core.   After I said no I thought maybe I should have looked at the job. Reply:I wouldn’t splice a 3/4“ thick beam with .035“ flux core! 1/16“ or .068“ no problem. If I just had to, I would use 1/8“ 7018, but would prefer 5/32“ 7018.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:That's why I turned the job down. I don't have my stick welder any longer. I guess I need to get a new one. Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkLincoln 175Monkey Wards 230v.  Stick
Reply:If the I beam in question here has 3/4" thick flanges, this is a very large I beam.  Just for reference, I beams are made in many different sizes. They are truly rated in size from an engineers standpoint of mass per meter or mass per foot of length.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:Welding it together to make one piece out of two would be possible. Welding it together to achieve max yield from the beam probably notMillermatic 252millermatic 175miller 300 Thunderboltlincoln ranger 250smith torcheslots of bfh'sIf it dont fit get a bigger hammer
Reply:I'm glad I turned it down.  Maybe next time. Thanks for the input everybody. Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkLincoln 175Monkey Wards 230v.  Stick

Reply:I've spice welded many I beams together as per engineers drawings for structural steel.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:My point was that his machines would be capable of making the 2 pieces stick together but if you are expecting to use that beam for anything structural that called for that size beam it would not be a good ideaMillermatic 252millermatic 175miller 300 Thunderboltlincoln ranger 250smith torcheslots of bfh'sIf it dont fit get a bigger hammer
