I saw this on several Deere tractors and was wondering if we finally got rid of chrome cylinder rods. How am I going to show now if I cannot even have shiny cylinders? Was there really a need to change this? Just curious.SA-250 TMDSquarewave 200Thunderbolt AC/DC1951 G.E. welder

Reply:Black chrome ? Manufacturers are cutting cost ant where they can.Measure with a micrometre, mark with chalk,  cut with a torch.Never force anything...just get a bigger hammer.RoyOld Airco buzz box approx 1974Lincoln mig pack 15Lincoln 175 square wave1954 9" south bend lathe

Reply:If they will rust I'd see to it they are fully retracted when not in use. Set the bucket lip on something solid so they can't bleed off.                                              MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:Thanks you all for responding. I still have not gotten pictures from telephone to go right. It does not look that bad actually, I was just making a little fun. It will be interesting to know how well it performs.SA-250 TMDSquarewave 200Thunderbolt AC/DC1951 G.E. welder
Reply:It is called nitro steel, it is far superior to chrome. Made by Mac steel.Mike

Reply:Nitrided rod, more corrosion resistant than chrome, we spec it on a lot of our cylinders....Mike
Reply:If they are nitride its a much better treatment than chrome, just doesnt look as good.We have seen this in the firearms industry, specifically AR pattern rifle barrels.  Traditionally guys have run un-coated stainless barrels for accuracy because chrome lining is not a very consistent finish, even though standard 4140 and 4150 steel barrels can be just as accurate as their stainless counterparts, but then you throw a chrome finish on the bore to protect against corrosion and rust(which the stainless barrel doesnt need) and accuracy goes to ****.  They have to bore a standard barrel to account for the chrome coating as well so you have a "loose" bore than hopefully the chrome thickness you spec is right on which it never really is so you end up with a bore thats not really to spec of has tight or loose spots which cause accuracy issues.  With nitride its not adding any surface thickness(or not enough to matter, ive heard 3 microns or about .0001) so you can bore the barrel basically to your finished size, nitride it and be done.  These barrels shoot right with their stainless counterparts accuracy wise, but cost about half as much.Ive got several chrome barrels that are 1.5-2" barrels.  Ive got a nitride barrel from the same manufacturer and its a .5-1" barrel.  Ive got a high dollar stainless barrel and its a .5" barrel.Pistol barrels have been getting nitride(or a nitride like) finish for years, but rifle barrels are just in the past 2-3 years starting to adopt the coating.Nitride is somewhere in the 65+ range on rockwell hardness.  Titanium nitride exceeds the rockwell hardness scale which ends at 70.
Reply:Rjacobs-that is interesting about the firearms. I have never been a gun enthusiast, not opposed to them but just forte. I had never thought about the chrome on a barrel affecting the accuracy. It is always interesting to see what all you guys have to say.SA-250 TMDSquarewave 200Thunderbolt AC/DC1951 G.E. welder
Reply:I meant to add the question about heat deflection to that last post. I have burned many piles of trees that I cleared with an excavator and the stick and bucket cylinders get mighty hot out there even if you are briefly throwing something else on the pile. Would the nitrate deflect that kind of heat better or worse?SA-250 TMDSquarewave 200Thunderbolt AC/DC1951 G.E. welder

Reply:I am the same way you are about form over function. I was really only making of the looks. The dull cylinders were kind of like someone throwing cold water on you when I have only ever seen chrome. It sounds like a change for the better. That should be why it is on there, but what some companies are doing will make you wonder. I have worn out several cylinders and broken a few. I only remember seeing a couple that were worn through the chrome though. I guess we will not have to worry as much about scratching the Nitride.
Reply:nitride is generally cheaper than chrome from what I understand, although it IS a better(in my opinion) process, depending on what you are trying to accomplish.  I dont know nothing about hydraulic cylinders so I dont know in this case if its better or not than chrome.  Although I do know JD probably wouldnt change something for the worse, again my opinion about them. Here is a pretty informative website, geared towards guns and barrels in particular, but very informative.https://sites.google.com/site/freeba...lonite-and-qpqThis is basically the same process that Glock does on their slides.  supposedly you can sharpen a knife on the slide of a Glock and not damage the slide.
Reply:The nitride process also adds strength to the rod. This is a proven process that has been used in industry for many years. In large compressors the nitride process performs better than chrome for wear and corrosion resistance.
Reply:My old backhoe has stone nicks in the chrome on the bucket cylinder. I know of no fix for them. I wonder if this rod might be receptive to solder or some other low heat process to repair when a stone falls on one.Last edited by Willie B; 06-04-2015 at 07:50 AM.An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared.
