I have a old Kohler k482 and one of the ears has broke off where the manifold bolts screw into.  They are 5/16" and half of the ear is cracked off and what i would like to do is weld a stud to where the ear is, since the threads on what is left of the ear are intact i was going to match the threads up and run a bead down both sides of it.  All i have is a HH140 I know that cast is difficult to weld but if I am not putting that much stress on the stud do you think it would hold only about 15-20 ftlbs.  If i do try this what grade stud would you go with or does it matter?  Also I have read about slowly cooling it by keeping it warm with a torch since the metals cool differently would that help?
Reply:Got a torch?  Braze it.If it were me I'd insert a piece of 5/16 carbon rod (McMaster Carr) and weld it up with some nickel rod keeping beads no more than 1/2" long at a time letting it cool to the point you can keep your hand on it then tap it cutting threads in the new material. But, you don't have a stick machine so it's back to brazing which you could still use with the carbon rod and tapping the built up material but the amount of heat may prove to be an issue.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
