Truck Crane Project

Well I am getting to old to dead lift heavy objects onto the back of my truck. So my old man had this Star Machine and tool crane lying around for at least 30 years. The tag on it is 1968. He used this on the back of his truck to lift real Cummins engines and huge transmissions out of tractor trailers. This model will lift 2 tons. It has an air over hydraulic pump. I need to modify the mount for my truck and add some bracing under my flat bed. I will also need to make a pin locking device (because my bed dumps) for the bed as well as a support jack set up. I have a small compressor already and a tank in my tool box. I am going to sand blast and paint this thing. He also made an extension arm. I have to find a pic where he has it in use on a 48 chevy flatbed welding truck. Reply:Wow you can tell that cylinder was built to do the work.   Seeems like I saw one just about like that at Harbor Freight.................lol. Good luck on the hoist.  Those things are really handy.

Reply:Interesting project, keep us updated. I noticed that when your father retired the crane he closed it (by the rust track on the pin joint) to minimize its size and also to protect the piston from rust saving the crane for future use.  Bob

Reply:Yeah I see what your talking about. But the correct term is rod.....the piston is inside the bore and can be seen unless disassembled. However the rod was collapsed during storing which kept rust from forming on it.
