Having just added a new 175HD (gift) to go with my 125/225 AC/DC Stick and Oxy setups. With options comes the quandry.On 1/8" to 1/4" Sq tube, heavy plate structural, and auto chassis type projects why choose Mig vs Stick, one over the other?Assume competant skill level on all.
Reply:i would choose the mig due to its ease. no slag (gmaw), no stopping to replace rods, just point and shoot (competant skill level assumed) = }i will always prefer gmaw indoors (or ideal outdoor conditions), and on smaller material. of course competance in both is very desireable
Reply:Migs are ideal for sheet metal, I can't imagine using stick on sheet metal thinner than about ten gage. I never thought much of O/A welding, it strikes me as a throw back to the time of gasoline plumbers torches. I know that bothers some people but is just my opinion. At some point you do have a crossover in capabilities relative to the stick machine and the small Mig. It then becomes an issue of which machine is more productive. Then again sometimes a stick can get to places a mig torch can't. The reality is that your mig can handle everything you are likely to want to do to auto chassis's.since you have both machines the real issue is setup time and where your interests lay. You might find it advantageous to set the Mig machine up for GMAW and leave it as such and use the stick machine for anything that the mig can't handle set up that way. The trick is in finding the arrangement that works best for you. You may very well find the stick welder sitting idle while you blaze through you welding projects with the MIG. It all depends on how the tool fits the job.Dave
Reply:Terrible problem you've got there, which machine to use. Based on the materials you stated I'd guess the stick will be the handiest. With a decent set of leads on it a stick can go anywhere and reach almost anywhere. I guess from a purely objective viewpoint I am looking at the stinger versus the gun thing. If you've got them both I'll bet you use them both about the same. |
