Reply:I have been hard facing some field cultivator shovels I do the top point about 1/2 inch or so then turn them over and run a bead down the wings on the bottom side I don't have any pictures but can get some tomorrow. I finished a roll of Hobart and did not like it but the one I bought is lincoln and runs real nice for me hard facing is different than just welding at least for me. On the shovels if they don't look to good just put them and run them til there worn out then they don't look so bad. I will check the wire also and post with the photos

Reply:Some of those welds in that thread are pretty scabby by the way lol. Should have looked at it firstNothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.
Reply:I will be building up and hard surfacing Grader scarifier shanks in the next couple of weeks. I normally use 7018 for the build up then 2 passes of wear shield 5/32 then wrap them in insulation or bury them in hot sand so they slow cool. The hard surface build up will check but the softer build up underneath won't So strength will not be compromised. Stoody used to have a book on hard surfacing and it covered everything from cultivator shanks to cone crushers. This book had good images and suggested consumables. I hope this helps you. I have a John Deere 450 dozer that I want to build a scarifier for to rip Glaciers when I open mining roads
Reply:Here are the photos of what I did for hard facing and wire that I used .045 flux cored wire shovel on left is lincoln and right is Hobart  I like the Lincoln better .
Reply:lol they look ugly....i surely can (giving my best shot) make it look worse...darn hard facingi prefer linclon too.

Reply:On those sweeps I would have hard faced the top instead of the bottom.  The top is what gets the most wear.  What little wear you get on the bottom will only sharpen the sweep as the softer metal erodes.
