I have the operitunity to tour a weld test facility and have a hand full of questions for them but being relatively new to welding I don't want to get back and think of something else or miss a good opritunity in general. So what are some questions you would like to ask a weld test facility about thier processes, equipment and tests them selves?

Reply:You could ask them what tests they are able to run and to what standards they follow.  The procedures should be outlined in the standards they test to.  As far as test equipment and lab equipment take note of brand names.  Talke to the people doing the tests and inquire about their background and training.  They may not tell you anything if they find out you are trying to cut in on thier business.Dan D.Manipulator Of Metal
Reply:@ Heiden - sounds as if you are exploring using an external test facility versus creating your own.  Check?  As mentioned previously in your related thread (http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...lab&highlight=), see post #13 and study the standards and services information linked therein. You should be able to draft 10 pages of good questions for their management, sales staff, testing technicians, and welders.Think 10,000 ft and drill down to a few inches.  You may be new to welding but surely the aforementioned website, the actual firm's, your self-motivation, and your moxie should prepare you for the tour. Draft ten really/really good questions across their products/services.  You need to invest the time now and prepare like it's a job interview. If you do not know what to ask, perhaps you need to bring one of your welders with who does know what to ask. The price of equipment would be the last question on my list.  Focus on the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the humans who perform said tests.Last edited by ManoKai; 06-15-2015 at 07:34 PM.Reason: clarification"Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi

Reply:Ask if they have kept some samples of welds that have failed or took some pictures. Also ask what other reasons they've failed people and if they've ever caught someone cheating and what happened to that person. I know here in Alberta, they caught a guy trying to do the theory test for his friend who didn't understand English very good. When they looked at his ID it didn't match the ID of the guy registered for the course. It's fraud and a criminal offence to have someone else take your test! The other guy left the country! You could ask if most people pass on the first try or need to go back 2 or 3 times.
