This is an EOD bucket from the Stillwater Platinum Mine.   Put a new Esco lip on it among other things.
Reply:Here's some pics from several other EOD bucket rebuilds.A lip pre-welded to the frog.  It spent the night buried in kitty litter for a slow cool. This bucket had to have new sides along with a new lip.New hinge and lower plate for the EOD assembly.  Plugged welded heavy washers on both ends of the hinge pin for keepers.

Reply:Nice work. how many hours did you have into it?
Reply:I too thought it was "explosive ordnance disposal" first time I heard it.   Can't really remember how much time I had in them and I don't have those records.   I rebuilt 5 of them over the winter of 2010-2011 while working at that one place and have been in on probably another half dozen or so at other times and places during the past 10 years.   These pictures aren't all of the same bucket. There's a good 2 days at the start gouging and cutting to disassemble and get them cleaned up and ready to start welding things back on to.   Each ones a little different depending on how hard it's been abused.   This one wasn't in to bad of shape and mainly got just a new lip and floor plate.  Plus some new wear iron on the bottom and back side around the bores.  This was kind of an odd ball one in that it was designed with the whole front end bolted on for supposed easy replacement.  Trouble was the people that designed and built it aren't in business any more and they couldn't get a new front end for it.
Reply:This was another job at the same place involving replacing a burnt up air cooled Deutsch engine with a new (larger) water cooled Mercedes Benz one in an old  (hard used) Wagner under ground mucker.  Had to cut the back end of it off and add in a two foot section to make room for every thing.   That's a group of highly trained mechanics scratch'n their nuts trying to figure out how they want me to make the engine mounts.
Reply:Talk about using something until it fails....they had worn the bottom sides on the ends of these loader arms down right into the bores and pins until one day the bucket just fell off the machine.   I cut what remained of the old ends off and welded on two new pieces of T1.  Then the machinist line bored them. Notice that extended hydraulic ram I have wrapped in fire cloth right above where the work was going on....well, as soon as we finished boring it one of the mechanics fired up the machine to move it over to another bay.  He pushed the actuator lever to try and retract the ram back into the cylinder but went the wrong way.  The ram shot a good 10' out of the cylinder and crashed to the floor (dam near went thru the over head door).   I'm pretty sure every one present when that happened peed themselves a little bit.   Talk about your dodging of a serious bullet.  Luckily nobody got hurt.   Turned out the piston on the end of the ram was sheared off but no one knew it.   The whole time I worked with it hanging over my head there was probably only 2" or so of that 3" diameter ram (that probably weighed close to 200 lb.) left engaged in the cylinder keeping it from falling out.   Oh boy, I still get a little stressed out when I think back about that.Last edited by HT2-4956; 03-27-2014 at 12:20 PM.
Reply:Nice work 4956, its a lot of work keeping us miners fixed up  The Stillwater boys need some better toys although, more like this Farmer2, this is what we do with them and why we need the EOD buckets
Reply:E'gads man but that's a nice looking piece of equipment.  My guess is that it's brand spanky new, just out of the carton and has not yet been under ground.   What are you mining for?

Before they get to work we put a couple of extra thousand pounds of Hardox and Zeta-bar on them.  Definitely hard service, haven't seen anything on the Discovery Channel yet that can compare. Our working ones usually get a mid-life frame up overhaul to do components and catch the major structural problems and then they are good for another round.Fix a few cracksOops on the AirArc to get the pin out but ended up replacing the whole bushing weldment to fix the cracks here..They come out shiny and hopefully good for another round despite the frosting on this one
Reply:weedenb,Sounds like you guy's have a pretty good maintenance department at your mine.   Here in Montana most of the UG mines that I know of  sub out that level of rebuild / repair work.   You said "AirArc" in connection with that oops on getting that pin out so I'm wondering if he tried to carbon arc it out.   An exothermic burning rod (like ArcAir's Slice Torch system) is the better tool for getting those stuck heavy pins out.  You can pierce right down thru the center of the pin and then work out toward the edges.  It's been my experience that once you get a good portion of the center out (and let it cool off) they normally give up and drive out.   That way you don't have to run the risk of getting close to the OD of the pin and damaging the bore.   This is toward the tail end of a complete frame up rebuild on a loader from the Stillwater mine.

Reply:And here I thought the lesson of that video was that the guy got over whelmed and stopped the pierce prematurely.  Granted, he didn't have much bar left but he should never have shut off the oxygen and let the bar freeze in the cut like he did.  I'm guessing a short pause to add one more bar on and I could have come out the other side and then washed a way most of the ID of that pin.  Of course you have to be dressed out correctly and then have the balls to stand there and deal with that level of blow back.Last edited by HT2-4956; 03-30-2014 at 09:21 PM.
