I just purchased a Lincoln 175 to do some welding in the garage on the jeep, but I'm having a problem. The unit turns on and the fan runs, but when I pull the trigger, it shuts off and won't turn on for 30 minutes. It's plugged into a 220v outlet on a 60 amp breaker. It doesn't trip the breaker in the box or the breaker on the unit.If I wait 30 minutes or so and unplug/plug in and reset the breaker in the box, it turns on again and the fan runs, but shuts off the same as before.Could this be a house electrical problem or do you guys think this is a welder problem? I connected everything according to the directions. It's loaded with flux core .035, fed all the way through the line by hand.Any thoughts? This is really working me up.ThanksJosh
Reply:Are you able to plug your machine into another source, like at a friends house? Is the machine brand new? When it shuts off, is it totally dead like it was unplugged, or is there some sign of life like buzzing or fan running? It sounds like you may have a poor connection somewhere, possibly in the home wiring. Trying the machine at another location may confirm this. The very fast time to shut down and the long delay to reset, in addition to the manual moving of switches, breakers. etc to get it to reset makes a poor connection something you really need to check for.If the machine is new, contact the place you purchased it from, or contact Lincoln, they should take care of this for you, if it is a problem with the machine. It probably has a 3 year warranty. If you need help troubleshooting this machine, post the code number and detailed information about what the mainline is and is not doing. Lots of folks here are very good at electrical problems.
Reply:Yeh, without a meter (VOM) of some brand or other and a small amount of experience using it, it makes trouble shooting these things more like pin the tail on the donkey. Do you have a meter?

Reply:My apologies for not getting back sooner. The circuit breaker took a dive. I swapped it with another breaker in the panel and everything works as advertised, although the wife wasn't real happy about no water heater Thanks for the responses, I got my first project done and the welder works great (although the user could use a little practice). |
