Have a guy that wants me to do some mobile work for him and theres no power at sight. I have a regency 250 with 30a spoolgun. Is it at all possible to run this off a generator.... if so how big would the generator need to be without screwing up the machine.
Reply:10,000 watts would be a guess. You can read the machine sticker to see what it requires,
Reply:Looked at Miller website at owners manual : 40 amp 230 volt 8.3 KW . You would need a 9000 to 10000 watt generator with 50 amp outlet.
Reply:Welder manual says 40 amp at 230....so amps x volts gets me 9200 watts. So should the generator be 9200 continuous. I don't really want to fry the welder.
Reply:Thanks for the info guys i appreciate it.
Reply:Math with generators doesn't always match up to what line current supplies, due to inefficiencies and loss, so you may have to go up even larger than math says will work so you have a cushion when the welder starts trying to draw power. While math may say you want 9.2kw continuous, I'd go bigger. 12KW or 15KW continuous is probably a safer bet..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:DSW is absolutely correct. Initial startup surge may require way more than the running current. Probably better to just bring an engine powered welder to the site.Miller Syncrowave 350Millermatic 252/ 30A spoolgunMiller Bobcat 225g w/ 3545 spoolgunLincoln PowerArc4000Lincoln 175 Mig Lincoln 135 Mig Everlast 250EX TigCentury ac/dc 230 amp stickVictor O/AHypertherm 1000 plasma
Reply:If you don't need flat out full power for the job, you may be able to get along with a smaller genset than the 10,000 + already mentioned.Do you know about how many welding amps you are going to need for the project at hand? Will you need full output of your welder or more like 110-120 amps? But then, having an engine drive is also very handy at times.
Reply:Thanks for the info guys. I just opted to rent a engine driven welder for the day and just rolled it into the price. Thanks again for all he info. |
