I have been out of the welding field for some time but now i am getting back into it, a lot of the jobs i am looking at state that you must read blue prints/shop drawings my ? is how well ?  I can read blue prints/weld symbols and such and i am a pretty good welder all around i can pick up a MIG and weld with it, i understand how the different gases work flux core VS solid wire, I have a pretty good understanding, I can stick weld, torch ETC....  OK back to the shop drawings and blue prints and weld symbols how well do most places want you to be at i mean i can read them, but if they wanted me to TIG weld a space station by myself just be reading the plans i would probably f**k something up
Reply:I think as long as you have a good idea most shops will tell you what they want and help you until you're comfortable with how they do things. I would think they're more concerned with your fabrication and welding skills. Being able to read a print but not having a clue how to build it doesn't do you much good. It depends on how complicated of stuff they build.
Reply:If you can afford a used blueprint reading book off amazon for like under $20, do so. That way when they call you on it, you can whip it out.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:If you can interpret the drawing as to what it is, the materials used in the item and the weld detail involved, I'd say your good to go.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:You might want to google and print out a set  of these. Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.

Reply:The old days they were called blueprints. No problem reading them but those white lines were confusing !
Reply:If you can read a simple drawing you should be able to work through a complicated one, just take your time and be thorough. If you are doing any type of intricate work, Chances are a QC dept. will be following the progression closely. Like checking fit ups and layouts before things get welded out, or cut. SO that should help you, brush up on your welding symbols though, those are important.- Christian M.C3 Welding & Fabrication - CNC Plasma Cutting-Mobile Welding-Custom welding and fabwww.c3welding.com
Reply:Every shop / draftsman has their own way of doing things.  The good ones give you what you need and nothing else ... the ****ty ones give you ever dimension twice and gum up the drawing with useless crap.  I am dealing with the latter right now.  From my end of management i expect the following from a fabricator / welder:Must be able to find the bill of material and use it (this knocks out 50% of applicants)Must be able to find part numbers (this knocks out another 25% of applicants)Must be familiar with common steel terminology (C6x13.5, W6x35)Must be familiar with common welding symbols and how to prep jointsMust know basic dimension protocols (baseline dimensions, running dimension)Must be able to do basic math to 16ths (there goes another 10%)If they can do that and pass the basic weld tests then they get "average" starting wages ... if they cant do that, they start at below average or they dont start at all.AWS CWI xxxx21711968 SA200  Originally Posted by WelderMike  I hate being bipolar, It's awesome.
Reply:never understood how print reading can be a problem.  . . . .its much easier to build with prints than without when i was in the shop, there was never anything hard to read, most drawers will break things down into detail sheets which are nice. must of the stuff is hand-drawn from the field workers anyway.now that im outside, nothing has changed, prints are prints. s= structural, a= architectural, p or pl= plumbing and m= mechanical. if you know that much then the rest is just pictures, with the occasional reference to weld symbol chart just to be sure.bosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
Reply:I read drawings every day as a contractor, only ones that sometimes have me scratching my head are some of the mechanical ones or when the architect has no clue how things should be put together. Took a few months of practice before I was competent at reading them but it's not difficult. If you already have an understanding of the weld symbols and material call outs then your ahead of the game.
