Got a new job that requires me to buy four 11R vice grips.  I prefer the ones with the swivel heads compared to the plain heads.Lowes has them for $22 each, $15 for the regular head.  LWC wants $18 for the normal.  I haven't really found anywhere local that is worth it for the items plus shipping. Are HF vice grips any good?  Any good places online for them?  Thanks!
Reply:I've got a couple of the HF swivel head vice grips (I didn't buy them).  Really, though, they aren't bad.  They get used near daily in my shop, and haven't failed on me yet.  They stay in the clamp bucket with all the others, and I don't find myself tossing them back to grab a name brand clamp when I pick one up (last clamp picked for kickball, so to speak), so they can't be that bad. Can't help you on price on the decent ones.  Google might be able to help, though.Who is John Galt?
Reply:http://www.homehardware.ca/en/rec/in...1?Ntt=auto+locI use these all the time. (mine have the swivel heads)They are awesome.I just had a pair die after 4-5 years of hard use (it may be savable)Not good for squeezing things together from a distance but excellent to hold things that are already together for tacking. No adjusting from size to size, just clamp. They tend to grab on your glove though and that is annoying.Expensive but worth it.Last edited by feetfats; 12-22-2010 at 02:19 AM.
Reply:I haven't purchased a set of HF visegrips in ages. Last set I bought worked well enough, although they usually have to be manually opened by hand instead of springing open like a pair of Visegrips and there is a little bit more flex to them when clamping than true Visegrips...but as I said, its been quite a number of years...7-8...since these were purchased. Also, these were the 18" models...so the flex was in comparison to ViseGrips in the same size range. If you are looking for price point, head to eBay as Visegrips can usually be found fairly cheaply. Craigslist might also be a viable option, depending upon your location...which BTW you need to fill out in your profile so people can give you more specific information for your particular area.As ViseGrips, now owned by Irwin, are now produced in China, no use in trying to go with the name anymore. The Lockjaw brand self-adjusting visegrips have worked well for me...also Chinese sourced. I don't know how they will match up for durability to the old ViseGrips, but I'd give them at least even rating with the new ViseGrips. Adjustment for clamping force seems counter-intuitive, but you'll learn to deal with it. They have a few more parts than a pair of ViseGrips...so hopefully they will last as long...I've some ViseGrips I purchased back in high school in the early '70s that are still going strong.EDIT: BTW, the Lockjaw ViseGrip clones are great at self-adjustment, but not worth a damn for drawing in two seperate sections needing alignment like a pair of true ViseGripsLast edited by WyoRoy; 12-22-2010 at 02:18 AM.

Reply:I bought some from Fastenal (Jonnesway brand) that have held up pretty good, almost as good as the Made In USA Vise Grip.  Since Vise Grip moved over seas I have not bought a pair of their pliers and don't plan too unless they go on a big sale.BTW Jonnesway is made in Taiwan.Anybody know of a comparable product made in USA?  I'd probably buy them for a buck or 2 more.

Reply:You folks know that I don't often post negative opinions, but my personal opinions find Irwin's actions as a corporation to be so disgusting and hypocritical, that I can't help it.Have you seen some of Irwin's latest all-American flag-waving ad campaign? To me, if that's not being hypocritical, what is? If Irwin is so proud of their heritage and business acumen, why don't they have the guts to be up-front about where their manufacturing is based?  All it would take is one sentence: "Irwin Vise-Grip, proudly manufactured in China."  Does that clip demonstrate true corporate pride, or what? Even with their packaging, Irwin seems to be doing their best to obscure an item's country of origin, that is, unless the item happens to be made in the USA.   What a joke. Wouldn't it be some interesting Karma, if in true Chinese fashion, some group would trample all over Irwin's US-protected  rights and then begin to produce and market clone Irwins at their true subsidized value? Yup, Irwin has made Alfred'slist.  Good LuckLast edited by denrep; 12-22-2010 at 03:46 PM.
Reply:Not to mention the fact that at 0:15 the video's butcher -I mean actor-  is about to chew up nice clean fittings with the wrong tool. Then at  0:22. he's turning the leaking pipe connection's bushing, which is actually loosening the connection, and causing the pipe to leak even more. Yeah, I love Irwin.

Reply:Hey guys,I know many are pi$$ed at what Irwin did.... it was just a matter of time. I was really lucky a couple years ago when an E-Bay seller listed Irwin 11R with a BIN (6) for $60 w/free S/H & the same for the 11SP. I jumped on both BIN's as they were USA mfg.. I already had (10) pr(6 shop/4 mobile), although at that price, why not? Then this past May, when our company closed, the owner "gave" me all the small hand tools in the metal dept. to just take home. He said he had no use for them & they weren't worth spending the $$$ to advertise & deal with the nickle-dimers. I ended up with another (8) pair of the 11R..... I'm good-to-go for a while.DennyComplete Welding/Machine/Fab. ShopMobile UnitFinally retired*Moderator*"A man's word is his honor...without honor there is nothing.""Words are like bullets.... Reply:Since their patents are long, long dead, anyone can make similar pliers.Do any US companies still do so?
Reply:I've got to agree with the sentiment, Denrep's video is really cheesy. They did a similar things down here, bought out a local saw blade manufacturer and ran it for quite a while but it's all gone East now.Any Snap on or Bluepoint locking pliers that are any good? It's getting harder to find stuff not made in the Orient. Not much in the way of tools made here and Sidchrome which was quite a good Aussie brand is now part of Stanley and I suspect they'll buy where it's cheapest. I bought a German pair (Elora I think) about 30 years ago. They're about 13 or 14 inches so they're cumbersome.. They grip well and are still a good tool but they're darned difficult to release, that's where Petersen? Vise Grip won out. There was a UK brans Mole that were nearly as good as Vise Grip but I don't know whether you'd get them there or even if they're still made. I just looked on Google and they're now part of Stanley too. I could only find Groove Pliers on the US site and they looked suspiciously like the Vise Grip ones in the video. The chinky Vise Grips will still be good tools if you can overlook their origin. How about Mac, Proto, S-K etc?"One of the things we have to be thankful for is that we don't get as much government as we pay for." Reply:I've been using these since the '70s, where I saw them being used by shipfitters building Navy ships. The 11R seem to me to be more useful than the 11SP.When they load up with weld spatter, I clamp them to the table and use a hammer and small sharp chisel to dislodge the dingleberries.I have nearly all Vise-Grip brand, and one import. If you notice, the clamping range on an 11R is finite, go the thickness of a playing card beyond that range and it won't hold clamped any more. My one import clamp has just a teeny bit larger clamping range, that's why I keep it!metalmagpienew to this forum
Reply:How about "Stronghand" tools?  Any knowledge about them?  I bought some for my Dad for Christmas, but have yet to buy any for myself.  I've been buying cheap-o vice grips because they generally get beat on.  I'd rather replace a cheapy.  Irwin's big fat plastic grip is lame and makes me feel like I'm buying a child's clamp.Carrlane has 'toggle clamps,' they look like the achieve the same goal.  Something to look into.  I've been interested in buying something from them.
Reply:enco has 11sp on sale for $16.99 and the 11r for $14.97you can use promo code fscjan
