ALot of you may know that I recently purchased a TA 201TS.I just got it today and its still like brand new.The regulator and hose has not be opened or used and neither has the TIG torch.I cant TIG just yet because I'm waiting on my tungsten and other misc items to show up first. So I decided to try and stick weld for my true first time.Needless to say, I suck bad lolBut eh, what do you expect when I've only Flux core welder for the past 5 years.First off the machine is very nice. Easy to set up, and way smaller than I thought it was!I got everything hooked up with ease, purchased some 6011 electrodes the other day and just went for it.The welder was set at 80 amps. Also when i stopped in the middle of anything and tried to restart with the electrode, it was hard to start. The rod kept sticking and what not.Im sure I just need to play with it and get the feel for it.Heres is my first couple of welds.-80 amps-6011 rod-there was a gap between both of these welds.-1/8 think steel.-electrode in "+"I tried the 100 amps again and here are some welds with it as well-100 amps-6011 rod-no gap-1/8 think steel.-electrode in "+"Last edited by irishluck; 02-18-2014 at 09:36 PM.
Reply:We can't see through slag. What amperage? Polarity? Rod size? How thick is the steel? Was there a gap in the butt joint?Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:i like the thermal arc stuff, i love the tig on the 95s, im gonna get a 181I this summer. If the conversation isnt money, then Ill see you later.

Reply:At 80+ amps I assume 1/8" electrodes? The welds look pretty good, especially because you are welding on "thin" steel. While practicing you will probably want something a little thicker if you are going to use 1/8" electrodes, 3/16"-1/4" steel will be easier when you get to vertical. From the amount/size of spatter you may need to hold a little tighter arc length. As for the electrodes sticking with restarts.. Most rods will be a little harder to restart because often there is either a ball of bare steel or a hard slag on the end. Its going to take practice to find what works best for you to restart.(strike like a match/tap against the steel...) More amps usually makes starts easier.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:Yes, I checked the box and it is 1/8" electrode with 1/8" steel.I used your tip on making the arc smaller and I think it worked. For now with the restarting I just cut the end off until I can practice more. There images are 2 separate welds and only using my 6th rod. Attached Images
Reply:From the looks of things you will figure this out pretty soon Is that some slag at the start of the weld or some porosity? When you start a weld strike the arc a little ahead of where you want to start the weld. It will let you weld over the arc strikes and seems to keep porosity at the start to a minimum. I'm glad to see that you're not beating the weld with a chipping hammer like lots of guys do, I HATE to see dings all over Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:That what I like to hear! The beginning I think I just held it there for to long. Still getting the hang of the start up.Yea I've done a lot of reading and researching prior to purchasing and starting up the machine. And of coarse a lot of good information and people on here as well.I kind of scrapped the weld like I watched a lot of people do in videos I watched. and then take a brush to it as well. One thing I notice about the weld and I'm not sure if you can see it but the very edges, top and bottom, of the weld seem to be all bubbly sort of?
Reply:Looks like just a thin layer of slag at the toes of the weld. It can be a PITA to get it all off if you don't use a wire wheel.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:Those are some nice 6011 beads. I guess the flux core taught you a thing or two. I love TAs. Great value in a quality machine.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
