Hello,I have to do a vertical lap weld on 1/4 inch flat bar to 1/8 inch box section.  Both are 4 inches wide so there will be two welds each 4 inches long.  I have tig welded the joint but I only had ~110 amps and I want to be certain of strength as this is on a suspension member on a kit car.  I will be stick welding it with 1/8 7018 excalibur, welding it flat would not be a problem but I have never done this kind of weld vertical.  What kind of amps should I be running, on flat or for 1/4 to 1/8 fillets I would run about 100 amps.

Reply:V12 if you are not sure welding something so critical, maybe contact a friend or someone else that's more familiar with welding.
Reply:I would not suggest anyone start out learning to weld vertical on a suspension piece. Vertical typically has the best chance of getting screwed up by inexperienced welders. Either cold welds or undercutting are the typical issues I see with guys just learning vertical.  I'd want to see guys have the technique down cold before they ever thought about a project like this. The others have made decent suggestions about having someone qualified do the work. I'd strongly recommend you take that advise. Personally stick would be my last choice for this sort of project. A good 230v mig would be my 1st choice. Tig would be #2, but I'd want more power. Stick is doable but harder than the others generally to learn if you don't already have the basics skills down. ( I'm assuming from your comment you can already tig semi well)Now if you are bound and determined to ignore everyone's good advise, I would not choose 1/8" 7018. With only 100 amps available, 3/32" 7018 would be a better choice for the amp range you have available. While it is possible to run 1/8" 7018 at 100 amps, you have to hold a fairly long arc to get the heat needed to do decent welds. The extra arc length will play havoc with you in vertical. As others have said you would want to be up higher in amps with 1/8" and keep a tight arc to do this well..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:You are doomed for catastrophic failure. Any pics of your tig weld? I'm not being rude bud, but I would like to see your skill level.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
