Reply:He explains why it's possible in at least one of his other videos. On a root pass, all the arc, sparks and heat are inside the pipe.  You can see that in the video.  His safety glasses may be UV blocking as well but I could be wrong.  Also note that once the bead reaches a tie-in point that he looks away because now the arc is on the outside of the pipe.Don't get me wrong - I'm not going to run out and try it but he does it on a regular basis and I'm sure he wouldn't if it resulted in arc burn. Reply:I haven't looked at the videos yet, but I've seen countless pipe welders carry on conversation looking me, and other people in the eye while putting in the root pass. Reply:I'm just a novice, but to me, he's a "welder's welder...."I probably will never get to the stage of welding pipe, but I love to watch his videos.

Reply:Am I the  only one that almost lost the keyboard and flat screen to the coffee exploding out of my mouth when he mentioned weldors being like crows in one of his videos?  I've still got a grin on my face over that one and it's twelve hours later......life is good
Reply:I bet I'm not the only man in the fourth quarter (65 years old) that watches the youtube videos and does the woulda/coulda thing on what it would be like if we had youtube back in the sixties and seventies..  Travis' stuff then would have made my life a lot easier, not necessarily funner, just easier picking up the welding thing.life is good

Reply:He'd be a blast to work with! Dude definitely knows what he's doing. I consider myself a little strange too and would enjoy the company.
Reply:He would be one of the most annoying persons to work with.......................however he would also be the best person to work with.  Anytime you work with a skilled person of his level it makes everyone raise their game and the fact he seems to enjoy teaching people some of the finer points of welding would make you all the more skillful.  There is never a point in which you can't learn something.I would be happy to work with him for sure.

Reply:Travis is a talented welder, tenacious human, and gifted teacher.  No questions.  Learned tons from watching/listening to his "theory" vid on the SA machines today.  He exudes ubber-confidence and a burning desire to win (24x7) and instruct others in the "why" and "how."  Perfect.  Guarantee he's a fire-eater in the field.  Task-focused and all in.  He's not afraid to trial-&-error every process, technique, and equipment setting in the quest for perfection.  Most importantly, he delivers excellent trade knowledge with a unique blend of technical prowess and levity. As a practitioner in the martial arts, very cool to hear Travis elude to Bruce Lee's style of learning/teaching.  JKD all the way.  His comment of it's not about burning 500lbs, but about burning each and every rod with intent and focus is illuminating to hear from a welder.  Use the same strategy for H2H and armed combatives.  The undeniable logic of the blade.Travis ~ continue to grind bro and consider moonlighting as a professional instructor in the structural/pipeline welding industry.  Aloha."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:I just found his site today from links here.  Had a lot of "honey-dos" on my list to perform today but have spent the entire day watching his videos.  Thanks to him so much for posting them!  I'm 70 and just learning welding as a hobby interest.  Have gotten a lot of insight from his positioning (not sure I can contort like that, but will try) and extraordinary skills.  My best friend of 40 years is a Canadian and a totally obnoxious a-hole  until you get to know him.  Have seen comments that were not that positive about FieldRes but I think most don't understand Canadian "hutzpa".  Keep up the great work FieldRes!JerryLast edited by storeman; 04-07-2014 at 06:14 PM.Reason: Clarity30+ yrs Army Infantry & Field Artillery, 25 yrs agoMiller 350LX Tig Runner TA 210, spool gunLincoln 250/250 IdealArcESAB PCM 500i PlasmaKazoo 30"  vert BSKazoo 9x16 horiz BSClausing 12x24 lathe20T Air Press
Reply:I have watched his videos whenever he posted them. I was pissed to learn that the BS that floats around on YouTube had gotten him down to the point that he hung it up for awhile. I am extremely happy to see him back. More people should subscribe to his channel. I've pointed it out to several coworkers. It is a rare gift that he has to be able to break concepts down, while keeping you thinking, and help you(me at least) to understand the craft. I've seen it written around here that he is a member. If so, thank you Travis for coming back onto YouTube. I learn from and am entertained by you. Thank you, m.
Reply:Every night I lay in bed and watch Welding videos on YouTube and I check his channel to see if he added a new video.....  I'm very happy to see he's back!!  The guy is great, a wealth of knowledge that takes it seriously and not so much.....  I love the term he uses "Mickey Mouse Welder".
