so my buddy dropped a trailer load of tools next to my barn last week. in it was a pile of home made junk and some super old stuff. so after junking all the junk i managed to get all of the usefull stuff into the barn. i got a small logan lathe running and i put new belts on an old craftsman drill press and it fired right up. now i am on to this contraption. It is a Van Norman 777s "perfect-o " portable boring bar. so after about 4 hr with a coffe can of kerrosene and some 000 steel wool i fired her up. does any one have any info on this unit? i sure use a portable boring system but um not so sure this was intended for what i would want to use it on (tractors and such i was saving up for a portable line boring deal for my mag drill ) any one ever seen one of these van norman bars in opperation ?
Reply:i dont see any pics posted of your machine..... i use to work for a machineshop that converted bridgeport clone heads and made a portable line boring machine with it.. i've also seen portable cylinder boring machines...tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:It's a portable cylinder bar, is there a small red toolbox in the pile of stuff? There should be several sets of cats paws, tool setting guage and toolbits with it.It's a bit large to work with if your boring outriggers and bucket bores but it's done. The smaller 944 is often found adapted to drive line boring bars and works very well.In good used condition they can bring 2000/2500 if all the parts are there.Matt

Reply:Is there any info on converting it to a line boring or are they all "one off" home builds? i'd sure like to see a bridgeport head into a line boring tool do you have any pics?

Reply:Originally Posted by bravofabthis is a common theme with all the stuff i got. it is missing all the tooling i think that they dug it all out of where they got the stuff. hopefully some will turn up. who is traditionaly in need of a machine like this? what might it be worth W/O tooling?
Reply:I took some pics,The first is the toolkit for boring, I looked a bit for the clamping parts for use with an engine block, but the junk must be buried in my shed. The second pic is a small line boring bar, people come up with any number of solutions to use the cylinder boring machines with small line boring bars...If this is what you have in mind (loader ends) your gonna be busy building things for a time but the combination works very well.Good luckMatt Attached Images |
