I'm looking to make a front mount trailer hitch for my 2003 dodge ram. My goal is to maneuver my 16' flatbed dual axle around the backyard better. I have a wide rv gate, but the alley access is too narrow to position the trailer easily. I have to manually move the trailer around with vehicle dollies. I heard a front mount hitch changes the geometry a little bit and will help getting it in and out. Here's the backyard
Reply:Does your Ram have receiver sockets for front tow hooks? If so, build yourself a hitch bar that will engage those sockets for the occasions you need a front hitch ball. If you currently use a receiver type hitch in back, make your front hitch bar with a receiver to fit your present rear hitch and use it on the front too. Most purists will scoff at the idea of using a front hitch to get the job done, they usually say "Why don't you just learn how to back a trailer?" I say, you do have a better perspective of what you are doing (wide field of vision beats a mirror) and some blind spots disappear if you are front towing. But, when you swap ends with the hitch, it can be just as tricky trying to drive the truck backward if you have something hitched on the front.A really tight parking situation might have you dropping the trailer and swapping ends a couple of times to manoeuvre before you are comfortable with what you are doing.
Reply:I've seen this method used at bbq cookoffs to position pits and other trailers in the team spot. It works well with a little practice (similar to learning to maneuver a forklift).GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:I do have tow hooks. But they're bolted on. It's a one- piece unit. I could in-bolt the tow hooks, and weld up a 2" hitch adapter... I think it's geometrically impossible to back my trailer into my rv parking area. The alley is about 10 ft wide
Reply:Not enough room for your toys? That's a deal breaker - you have to move. Man rule #4 - must have room for current toys and all future purchases Can't help you with your project I'm afraid - other than to agree on making it for a removable receiver tube hitch. If you don't, you know dang well you'll smack your shin checking the oil Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
