sa 200 light stuff

Alrighty first tread. I have visited often but never posted. So I bout an sa 200 a few months back and had a couple of questions, it is a black face machine aproximatly a 1967-1968. Kind of wondering for those of you who use one how does yalls do on low amps. mine seems to run real hot(arcs) I am kind of leaning to ,hey its a pipe welder what do you expect. But nun the less I am curious and any info would be greatly appriciated.
Reply:Are you welding with 6010   or 7018 ?might make some difference. with low hydrogen ,i usually set volts at about 55,then try different amps settings. I have a sa200, but never used it after i got a sa250 diesel.[SIZE="5"Yardbird"
Reply:I have used mine to weld some pretty light stuff, the smallest rod I have ever used on it is a 1/16 ESAB 316L, I was running about 25 amps.  It was on a Hardy outdoor wood boiler that I worked on.
Reply:with the switches all the way down it will weld an 1/8 6010 with no problem. Is there some way to adjust this. The idler was unhooked when we bout it and I hooked it up and it works but could the motor be spinning to fast. All I have is questions as I am new to the machine it was  $350 at a pawn shop and I heard they were supposed to be one of the best machines How could I pass it up. I would kinda like it to run at low amps so I could weld thin stuff Could i just pin the motor to Idle and weld.
Reply:back to the guy who said its running to many rpms         i think it should run about 1600 rpm w/ gov in full throttle pos. w/o load         hell ive tig d w/ mine about 30 amps   i turn everything down and clamp exciter arm stationary about 1000 rpms
