I know this probably isnt the best forum for this, but i figured i would post it and pick some brains here, i know several here know about machinery.. i will probably post over on practical machinist also..Anyways, heres my question.. i ran the serial number on the bridgeport i just bought, got it home so i looked at the serial number...  the serial number is BR149294 there is a 12 stamped over the BR..  the 12 over the BR tells me the mill has 12inches of travel in y axis.  so this leads me to believe now that i have one of the larger Jhead bridgeports.. also found it to be a late 1972 model..  so i cant call it old cause its younger than me by a 3 years..   Can anyone give me anymore info perhaps..  maybe what the x axis travel would be? i still have it tied down and tarped on the trailer so i cant measure the x axis until i unload it.  I'm thinking they have like 36inches of travel in x axis, but cant really remember off the top of my head. thanks bruceLast edited by brucer; 02-15-2011 at 03:24 PM.tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:I think the standard travel on them was 36" in the x direction with a 54" table.  For it to have longer travel, it would have to have a longer table (in that direction), so that's a pretty easy way to determine it.  I know that doesn't help you with it under the tarp, but that's all I have for the moment.Even with the long tables, I try to avoid having a big unsupported length (read: weight hanging cantilever off the knee).  It might not be entirely necessary, but I don't like to take the chance of something going wrong.
