Hi all,Just wondering if it would be possible to add volt/amp gauges to a welder with a hold function.  You can buy cheap digital volt gauges and amp gauges with a shunt on ebay. But they are useless without a hold function.  If they displayed the voltage/amps for 10 seconds after the trigger was released they would be useful.Anyone know a way around this? Thanks

Reply:I'm old but I just can't understand the need to know how many amps/volts are coming from a welder. The proof of any needed changes are right there in the puddle.                                                               MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:Not really practical. The readings will fluctuate to much to be useful while welding.  You calibrate/test a welder by putting on a variable resistance load bank and adjust until you reach the welders rated output ex: 200 amps @ 25 VDC output or desired output if your calibrating the amperage settings.Idealarc 250AC 225SVictor OA-older made in USA stuff. And a crap ton of other stuff.

Reply:I just did a mod to my lincoln where I disabled the capacitor bleed resistors and replaced them with a 24vdc computer fan.If I stop welding and lift my helmet I can see wat my arc voltage was. I know from the time I release the trigger to the time it takes me to get eyes on the volt meter the fan bleeds off 1 volt. Before the 40ohm resistor would bleed the capacitors residual charge down to 5 or 10 volts before I could look over at the volt meter. Is heavy modification even an option for you?old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder
Reply:I am after a permanent fixed solution, so using a multimeter is not really an option.  I know a lot of people say don't bother, they are a waste of time.  I use them at work all the time.mad welder 4.  heavy modification is no problem for me.  I know my way around electricity and a soldering iron.
Reply:Maybe you can install a cheap 5 to 50 volt DC standalone digital volt meter (like I did) and disable bleed down resistors. That is the cheapest way to get a volt reading. For about $20 you can get a ebay volt/amp meter. The DC amp meter is on a mV shunt, your ground or gun power supply has to all be ran through the shunt. For me I use a fluke325 amp clamp with DC amp reading capability,  about $230 used on ebay. Not a good option if you dont need a portable non invasive DC amp measuring ability, I use it to check DC amps on all kinds of different machinery.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder
Reply:If your welder has an output gauge of some type you might record it with a video camera while welding. It would get you close.
