Not quite welding related (yet). Thought I'd share and see if I can get some ideas from you guys. Latest Project (in progress): Reclaimed Bamboo Flooring desk. Not sure what I want to do for the legs/foundation, or the finish yet. Ideas/thoughts/comments always welcome!Cheers!~Justin Manufacturing EngineerWWU Vehicle Research Institute c/o 2010
Reply:Nice piece of wood.  I can see it having some great possibilities when incorporated with some metal.   If you're after a sleek, modern, utilitarian look you could build a supporting base from various sized square tube.  If you want it to look a little more unique (one off) maybe you can re-purpose some found objects from the junk yard into a base for it.  It all depends what you can scrounge up and what kind of look you're after.  A good temporary solution might be to build yourself two  custom metal saw horses to set it across.  That way you can sit there at it and use it (or stand there and drink beer at it) while you think up a better more permanent idea.
Reply:The bamboo is beautiful.  How thick is it?  Do you have plywood or something else under it?I am with 4956's second idea.  Various scrap pieces for the base, it would be a contrast to the bamboo.  Things like camshafts for the legs, use ring gears etc. as gussets, roller chain looks good too. possibilities are endless.  Do a google search for metal furniture, or reclaimed metal furniture or something like that.  Gets the creative juices flowing.

Reply:Awesome ideas guys! Keep them coming! Not sure what I wanna do next but I'll keep you all posted. It is solid (not laminated) bamboo flooring. There is a piece if 5/8" plywood used as a "subfloor" to keep it all together and rigid. The bamboo is just over 1/2" thick. Not too bad so far considering all the material was FREE!!~Justin Manufacturing EngineerWWU Vehicle Research Institute c/o 2010

Reply:I like the leaf spring idea but I think it works best for a coffee table and less so on a desk. I think they might get in the way. I'll probably come up with a tube frame design just not sure yet. Keep the ideas coming!~Justin Manufacturing EngineerWWU Vehicle Research Institute c/o 2010
Reply:Maybe steel sculpted legs of the look and shape of the bamboo trunk? Maybe add a few twigs and leaves of copper, let them "green" up.http://www.facebook.com/LockhartMetalArthttp://www.facebook.com/pages/Grumpy...44306259043484

Reply:BlutoWhat are the dimensions, dining or coffee height, and does it have placement? I would find its home first, then design its underpinning by borrowing design elements from the room's architectual and companion furniture details.Opus.Last edited by OPUS FERRO; 04-20-2014 at 12:06 AM.Reason: Not enough s's
Reply:It is 28" deep by 73" wide. Planned height is ~30" . It will be my fiancés desk, and goes in the left corner along the wall with a window to look out.~Justin Manufacturing EngineerWWU Vehicle Research Institute c/o 2010
