Hey guys, I've been thinking of getting into portable line boring, I think I could do well in my area plus I have many family owned heavy equip that I can practice on.  The most economical kit I've found so far is this Mag drill kit from: http://www.americanmachinetools.com/Line_Boring.htm I have a USA 5 Jancy that I think would be enough to work with I just don't want to wear it out by doing things it wasn't meant to do.  I've also been looking at any used setups, but they are hard to find. There is also this guy that sells his dvds, plans and book for $1500http://thelineboringbook.com/  I'm fully capable of building my own setup, I would just need some guidance, but not $1500 worth.  I would also like to use a bore welder instead of welding by hand, I just don't know too much about them.  I know there are many others here that want to start line boring also.  What do you guys think? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advanceLincoln: 255 Mig w/spoolPrecision Tig 275Ranger GXTMiller: 211 Mig w/spoolMaxstar 150 STLSpectrum 875Scotchman 5014 IronworkerHougen-Ogura PunchJancy USA-5 SluggerPowr Kraft LatheVictor Pattern TorchJet 9m Bandsaw
Reply:im in the midle of building my own set-up ill give you a list to start from. you will need flange bearings in what ever size bar you want to use i have 1" cause i got them for free. you will need to build mounting fixtures for them next you will need to build your drill mount preferably with a bearing built in. you will need your bar preferably 4140  bar in your prefered lenghts i have 60" , 48",30'' you will need to cros drill them to hold your booring fixture next you will need to make your booring fixture you will need axces to a good mill to get this done I still dont have my design figured out, i still want to look at more examples. and you will need to figure out some "centering cones" which i am also still working on im thinking some UHMW and ill cut the tapper on my lathe. now get your creative juices flowing and get out a pencil and  grid paper and make some magic
Reply:I've been thinking about all of that myself, everything seems pretty straightforward, the only 2 main concerns I have are tool bit mounting on the bar, and fine center adjustment even after using the cones.  Do you have to mill out a square holes somehow into the bar to hold the bit? After using the cones to center, do you have to do anymore fine centering? (I ask this because on some of these boring kits, I see bearings that can be adjusted even after mounting)Whats the best material to make a bar out of? already chromed?By the time your done getting everything together, is it cheaper to just by the kit from american machine tool? (even though they have plastic cones, which would be the first thing I would thrown out)Lincoln: 255 Mig w/spoolPrecision Tig 275Ranger GXTMiller: 211 Mig w/spoolMaxstar 150 STLSpectrum 875Scotchman 5014 IronworkerHougen-Ogura PunchJancy USA-5 SluggerPowr Kraft LatheVictor Pattern TorchJet 9m Bandsaw

Depends on your free time and how cheap you can get bearings(even though they have plastic cones, which would be the first thing I would thrown out)
Reply:Thanks Matt for all the info, what is the procedure for fine centering after you have centered with cones and mounted the bearings?Lincoln: 255 Mig w/spoolPrecision Tig 275Ranger GXTMiller: 211 Mig w/spoolMaxstar 150 STLSpectrum 875Scotchman 5014 IronworkerHougen-Ogura PunchJancy USA-5 SluggerPowr Kraft LatheVictor Pattern TorchJet 9m Bandsaw
