Yep, that's my question.  I have the chance to buy a SAM 400 with what is supposedly a Continental 3-cyl diesel.  In the SAM manuals I've found on the Lincoln website, it looks like the 400 was available with Continental gas engines, but I didn't find a reference to Conty diesels.  I've only seen pics of it, but the owner seems like a straight shooter.  It looks a little worn but not too badly, and has about 200' of 2/0 lead and whatever equipment you use to arc gouge with.  I don't NEED this machine, but it would open up some heavy equipment repair markets for me, and I don't think anyone else in this area is mobilizing this much amperage.  I'm not worried about the weight, because it would only go along when needed.  I have the TB for normal work.  And did I mention, the price is right.  So anyhoo, I've already spoken to the owner who will give me first shot at the machine.  I've been doing research and the engine is what I'm trying to figure out right now.  The owner says it's a Conty, but I can't make that fit with the factory literature I'm finding.  Basically, any advice would be helpful.  I've never even seen a Lincoln engine drive in person, let alone run one.  But I do hear they're nice.
Reply:I'm sure the guys below can advise you on the conty. Seems most SAM 400's ran a bedford gm 220, but I dunno, could have been a re-power too,  you just never know... keep us informed on the hunt!http://www.jobbersinc.com/continental.htmLast edited by Sixshooter; 02-28-2011 at 11:21 AM.-1948 Short Hood SA-200-Millermatic 251-Hypertherm PM45-Victor Torches/Regs
Reply:Thanks for the info - still trying to identify the engine.  I have one grainy shot of the engine's right side.  Maybe someone can i.d.?  I know it's a long shot....I'd give you more pics but this isn't right next door. Attached Images

Reply:Well, now that I've bought the machine I have the answer!  It's a Perkins 3.152, and this engine was made in 2001 according to the code on the block.  It's obviously a repower, and is rated less than original engines.  Maybe as time goes by I'll get lucky and find a 4.236 to replace it with.  It did weld pretty nicely with the 1/8 7018 I had on the truck, so I've got another mobile power source for now anyhow.  Brought the welder, 200' of 2/0 cable in nearly new condition, and a lightly used Arcair gun home for $1,000.  I doubt it was a steal, but I don't think I got taken.
