I am getting ready to buy a sand blaster but I am not sure whether to bother with the pressure pot style or just get a simple siphon kit (like the $23 one from Northern Tool).I will be using it for weekend projects and to maintain some logging and farm equipment. The compressor is a 60gal 3.5hp 220V that delivers something like 11cfm at 90psi.I'd like to hear a recommendation from folks who use sandblastersHobart LX235Victor 250 Oxy-Acetylene Rig (welding and cutting)Bobcat 773F-350, 1999, 4x4, 16' 10K# trailerOutdoor Wood Burner - 10 cords/year
Reply:your air supply should (barely) handle a pressure blaster...My 60 Gal. 5 HP keeps up O.K..  I would never buy a siphon SB... they are worthless,But if your goal is to strip paint off a pencil , it may work.... buy the $29 dollar one and you will find out.....I can hold my bare hand in front of the siphon SB my brother has, and my skin is still there...........
Reply:i bought one from eastwood most of there stuff isway over priced but there sand/soda blaster is a good dealmade in USA Attached Images
Reply:I have both and use each for different things. The siphon is cheap and good for the occasional use. For more than occasional use the pressure pot can't be beat. PP uses less air and material with more pressure so it is much more efficient but is a lot more expensive. Both by virtue of the media they use wear very rapidly and require maintenance. They can be a PITA but nothing cleans better!

Reply:I have and have used both.  Started out with a siphon feed, worked OK on the occasional rust spot but to sandblast heavy steel or equipment forget it.Bought a pressure sand blaster and my old 3hp compressor couldn't keep up, upgraded to a 5hp 80 gal tank compressor and it barely keeps up, runs steady.  I'd like to get a small portable diesel screw type compressor just for sandblasting if I can find a deal on one."The reason we are here is that we are not all there"SA 200Idealarc TM 300 300MM 200MM 25130a SpoolgunPrecision Tig 375Invertec V350 ProSC-32 CS 12 Wire FeederOxweld/Purox O/AArcAirHypertherm Powermax 85LN25
Reply:I'm no expert but I recommend this site: http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/sandblasting.htme.g."The two syphon guns in the photo above do have smaller nozzles inside - they are positioned inside the larger nozzle to create the suction to pick up grit, but this means that much more than half of the air supply is wasted in picking up the grit."The site prefers pressure to siphon... as was said earlier here.Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:Im looking at getting a small SB unit myself.  Question I have....is for a small pressureized unit....how much air are you guys using and at what PSI ?JD
Reply:with all the environmental bs in Ca. i am wet blasting more often the dry on the farm. hook the nozzle on my pressure washer, line my bags of sand up and go down the line stabbing the pickup robe into a new bag. no dust so no respirator and much cooler in the 100+ degree heat in the summer. talk about organic. if you want nice loose garden soil just wet blast a few big pieces of equipment where you want to plant your garden then till it under.225NT bobcatAEAD200LEScott 125mm175, mm252 w 30A, PT225mm211, TA 181iHyper Therm 380, cut master 529100X & XX, Digital Elite6 Victor setssmith little torch, meco midget kalamazoo band sawsteel max saw evoulution circular saw

Reply:Home build pressure assist blast pot - works great - using a medium sized propane tank (40lb).  Get the plans here: http://www.ammoman.com/sandblaster/index.htm
Reply:I ended up buying a $29 siphon sandblaster from TSC with a bag of black beauty media.  I poured the media into a 5gal bucket, put on my respirator, goggles and face shield, insulated gloves and went to work. Used my 3.5HP/60gal 230V compressor (10-11cfm at 90psi).  I have a simple moisture reducer (bought at lowes) - nothing fancy to treat the air.I won't win any races with this setup, but it works like a dream on the convoluted parts (trailer jack screw, hitch assembly).  I used a pad sander on the larger flat areas.I have to say that I would recommend the cheap siphon kit for folks on a budget that need to do a few parts on a weekend.  I have no doubt that a production outfit couldn't use it, but for the weekend warrior this thing is just what the doctor ordered.Hobart LX235Victor 250 Oxy-Acetylene Rig (welding and cutting)Bobcat 773F-350, 1999, 4x4, 16' 10K# trailerOutdoor Wood Burner - 10 cords/year
Reply:I've had this one for several years and am using it on my current welder restoration project for the hard to reach areas such as louvers. Reply:I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the pressure assisted blaster that combines the best of pressure and siphon units. If you Google pressure assist blaster or PA blaster you can find the guy who sells the plans for $10. His website was down when I built mine but I was able to glean what I needed from the posts people had online.Basically it is a pressure blaster that has the air into the top of the tank regulated to 5-15 psi. That same low pressure air transports the media from the bottom of the tank up to a siphon feed gun. The high pressure air only needs to be 60-70 psi and is fed into the air port of the siphon gun. The system reduces the media usage dramatically and also reduces the clogging that you get with pressure blasters. You need to have a water separator in the air line. I made mine from an old air tank that I cut the end off and rewelded it back on backwards to provide a funnel to fill the tank. The tank doesn't have to be in great shape because it only sees 15 psi or less. I have heared of people making them out of old water heaters or air compressors. I have about $40 in the 2 regulators and the siphon gun was only $10 from Home Depot online. The media I use is a ground up copper refining slag that I buy from White Cap for about $12/ 100 lb bag.
