What is the best cover pass method for 4-8 inch sched 40 with 7018 3/32, stringers or a weave? I have to take a 6G test next week and want optimal results. Thanks. If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is!
Reply:For pipe that big in diameter I would run stringers. I think this was 2 or maybe 2 1/2. Attached ImagesDont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:Nice job, they look good! I haven't touched any pipe in position in about 18 months, so I have to set up and brush up for the 6G test at the end of next week. The 6010 root and the 7018 hot pass are no problem, I just want to get my technique back on my cover passes and absolutely smoke this guy's brain! Thanks for the help, it's well appreciated. I'll post some pics when I'm getting on par again. If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is!

Reply:I always run stringers. I hate controlling too much of a puddle. Sometimes, I'll set the rod in the stinger about two inches from the normal plain end. This helps with better control in positions where you may not be comfortable.
Reply:Personally CEP, I think you are holding out on everyone, I believe that you are a "closet" pipe welder. It's really time to come out of the closet. Best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:Thanks guys! But you really need to get out more. Personally I think pipe welders are the best! Way back when I worked in a lot of oil refineries, I worked around a lot of pipe welders. One job there was over 200 pipe welders on it. Reply:Your testing WPS will tell you, but most of the time it's stringers. I find most of the time they use 2" for tests Sent from my XT1080 using TapatalkAWS 17.1, D1.1 and ASME IX (GTAW)Miller Syncrowave 350LX, Maxstar 150sth, Maxstar 200DX and Millermatic 252 w/ Spoolmatic 30aMiller buzz box with Lincolin TombstoneThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38
Reply:weaves are pretty tough to do on 6G.
Reply:6G usually is automatic stringer. My ASME IX states 2" minimum to unlimited diameter. Tested on 6" sch 40. Good wire wheel, rods hot out of the oven and some patience have passed several tests for me...Lincoln Power MIG 210 MP ( boat anchor )Lincoln Weld-Pac 100 HDHobart IronMan 230Cutmaster 42Jackson NexGenSumner Ultra ClampsDWM120 |
