Shopping for TIG for home use. I can get a Lincoln Precision TIG 185 or Squarewave 175 for about the same price and condition. The Squarewave is quite a bit closer, so call it $100 cheaper after I pick it up. Which one would you pick and why? Both are really power-hungry, but I'll have 60a service available. The Precision goes 5a lower, and 10a higher ( assuming I don't pop the breaker ). Otherwise is there much difference? Thanks.
Reply:I was looking at the same two machines. I went with the 175 just because I found a lot of internet posts of electronic failures with the 185. Keep in mind that the 175 (and I'm sure the 185) want a 100 amp breaker. I'm very happy with the 175, good size machine for a hobbyist.Jim
Reply:After hemming and hawing between these two, I bought a Miller I had made an offer on a barely-used Syncrowave 180 that I thought the seller ignored... until he got back to me yesterday. Just picked it up tonight. Now I guess I better get on putting in that 230v plug.
Reply:i have the squarewave 175. i love it. its a good unit. i have a 50 amp circuit and its never triped it. even when i had it cranked up almost to the max. it burned my hand on the air cooled torch i had it up so high for so long and no problems with a 50 amp circuit. i dont know anything about the 185 but i like the simplicity of the 175. its easy to use and does a nice job.just curious, how much is that 175. i paid $1000 about a year ago for mine ready to use with foot pedal, thumb slide and some tungtens and small parts.
Reply:I was going to pay $950, pretty much ready-to-weld sans tank.
Reply:I also have the SW tig 175 and it's never let me down. I've used it to try to learn to tig (considering the company on this board I will not say that I've learned to tig yet). I wish it went lower on the low end and I'd like more power on the top end too, but it seems to be a good solid unit when used within its capabilities. I put mine on a 100 amp breaker and it just keeps running. That Miller looks to be an excellent choice as well, I think you'll be very pleased with it.KevinHobart Handler 210Tweco Fabricator 181iLincoln Squarewave Tig 175
