I'm going to fabricate a skid plate for my motorcycle out of .125 aluminum and I was wondering what you guys recommend to use to get a smooth cut. I have plasma cutter but have not tried it on aluminum. How does a jig saw work? I know.....I should just get out to the shop and try it myself but I wanted to see what you guys recommend. Thanks
Reply:Jig saws work but don't make smooth cuts. I always have trouble cutting a straight line with a jig saw, but they're great for curves. For long straight cuts on 1/8" to 1/4", I typically use a circular saw with a metal cutting blade on it. Barks the noise and the $hit like you wouldn't believe, but leaves perfect straight & square shiny edges. Use lots of lube, or get some cutting wax for the blade. If you have a plasma cutter though, why do you even need to ask? Cut with plasma, zip the nerds off the bottom of the cut with a flap disc, fixture & weld. Done deal. |
