I built this with the intent of burying cable. I am a ham radio operator on the side and  have 100 feet of cable I need to bury. But I have a feeling my little  tractor will not handle this tool unless the grounds really soft. I made all the classic Welding mistakes. I used 7018 but I did not have proper fit up on many of the joints. Also I did not clean it properly and I was in a hurry. It's 3/4 inch steel blade welded to 1/8 inch walled tubing. But what the heck, if it breaks,  I'll just re-weld it, and it won't get anybody hurt. If it was a trailer hitch, I'd most certainly toss it out. Reply:looks like it should work. I built one like that a few years ago, what really helps I to get an old disk blade and mount that before the blade so it cuts the sod before the knife

Reply:It will work if the ground isn't too hard or rocky. It would work better with some "hook" to the cutter to help pull it down. What's the HP on the tractor?
Reply:Let me suggest that after you get the thing like you want it................make a "pilot run" over the exact path/track you plan to bury the cable in.This way, there will not be any "surprises" like a big rock or a massive tree root that you don't know about.Doing the dry run first will permit you to deal with isolated objects (if there are any) before you start laying cable. If you hit something, dig it out and move on, or choose an alternate route. After successfully running the course, go back to the starting line and follow the same track laying in the cable.I would also want a "bell mouth" configuration to the cable entry point on the tube to guard against the cable getting nicked/cut as it enters the tube.To that end, perhaps a cheap, short, plastic funnel stuck into the tube end ought to suffice.Last edited by walkerweld; 04-30-2014 at 11:08 AM.
Reply:Great suggestions and advice. My tractor is a 26 hp Kubota. I did add to the design and plan on adding more stuff. That funnel idea I like. This should keep the tube stronger. Reply:Yup. We laid water lines with a 23hp New Holland with something similar mounted to the 3pnt. Reply:just out of curiosity is this for co ax or ground planes?  post pics in action or perhaps alink to a vid on utube. Reply:100 feet of soft dirt would be no problem. I can't go 2 feet without hitting a rock, would add a gusset for strength. Hobbyist - At what point is a "hobby" out-of-control?

Reply:WelderMike, you're probably right on the 3-point setup. That thing is probably going to have too much wobble-around play in that receiver. I'll try it as is, and if doesn't work well, I'll go with your recommendation.Miller Bobcat 250Syncrowave  200Millermatic 252Spoolmatic 30ASpectrum 625 X-TremeMaxstar 150SVictor O/A torchesDewalt angle grindersWelded on/off for over 40 years.

Reply:I built one similar to what I've seen in these posts and we burried 1500 feet of invisible dog fence wire in a couple hours. The only thing I would do different... naturally I saw it AFTER I built mind... is to slant the slitter to one side so the ground lays back down all by itself. Genious! (Not my idea though)

Reply:Ditch witch and other companies make plow machines about the size of your tractor. I think important features are torque converter drive allowing the transmission to slip rather than spin the wheels. Another essential is a hydraulic vibrator, Plows point forward, ( the bottom tip is several inches forward of ground level.) This allows it to lift rocks up away from the cable. While your tractor / plow match may be a problem, it should bury cable shallow. Please don't bury 120 volt cables with this, it'd be dangerous!
Reply:Sorry Mick. All the picts of D11's were either of poor quality or had double rippers. I didn't think he needed to do two trenches for this.Maybe a small trencher would work. Reply:I built this one many years ago. It is a knife off of an anhydrous ammonia applicator.  I usually have it bolted to a 2" receiver tube and use my compact tractor. I would bend the tail of your tube up a little more so the wire can flow straight back and not down. Give yours a try. You can learn a lot about what works and what won't. Reply:I tested it today and it worked after I welded a down-plane on the bottom of it to keep it submerged. It will serve it's purpose and I'll give it away to a friend who has a similar project of burying cable. The hook design at the bottom that other previous posters showed is much better, but I just wanted to use up the scrap steel I had laying around. Reply:I like the down plane idea in place of the hooked cutter. very ingenious. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger

Reply:A company i do some work for does this type of work with long haul fiber and copper cable a lot. They use what they call a rip Cat first (a D9 with one shank) to pre plow. It is hooked to the plow Cat with some huge cable chokers. The plow Cat is almost the same as the rip Cat but instead of the blade it has arms to hold the cable reels and a chute behind the ripper. I have built the chutes with up to 8 separated passages for different cables. I have seen this set up plow in over two miles of 96 strand fiber optic cable in an 8 hour day. We even built a rig that went behind a semi truck that plowed in 4" conduit at 48" below grade. If I have anything coming up with them I'll get some pics to post.

Reply:I made something similar years ago my only problem was keeping it in the ground, it wanted to push up. Hopefully the foot you made will take care of that. I ended up bolting a piece of angle across the draw bar and above the three point arms so that they would not raise up. Some serious force was being applied trying to raise it as it slightly bent the draw bar. I have buried thousands of feet of wire with mine. Underground wireless dog fence, cat5 to my shop and lord knows how many feet of 12_2 electrical.
