My dad's wood lathe needed a heavier tool post that would not move when turning heavy pieces. This is what I came up with. 2 pcs of 1/2" plate cut out on the plasma table at work. Bolted them together and eventually fused them together around the edges with the tig. The collars are made from some D.O.M. tubing I had laying around. The idea is to be able to change not only the tool post but also the size of the shaft on them. Some times a big rest is not needed for doing pens or bottle stoppers so I made it so you can take the rests from the small lathe and put them right in.TOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE

Reply:Man that is heavy duty.  Would like to see it in action.
Reply:Pics as promised. You can see my version compared to the factory one. The biggest problem with that one was the eccentric shaft that pulled up on a tee nut and it always seemed to come loose. The big black delrin washer will have a steel 3/4" washer placed on top of it after I face some more off of it. The delrin keeps the metal washer from scraping all the paint off when you slide it.The only issue that I found is to get real close to a small diameter turning (1" dia), the rest has to be positioned at about a 45deg angle because of the diameter of the lower collar. If you try to go straight in the washer hits it.Last edited by Chris T.; 05-07-2014 at 07:52 AM.TOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE

Reply:I appreciate the compliments. He really likes it but has been to busy to turn anything yet. I've got to justify all my tools somehow so I build him tools/jigs/etc for his woodworking activities. Most of the time he will see something in a book or have a general idea what he wants and It's my job to build it. All the pics were taken with my phone, seems like I bring it out to the shop with me and usually forget to take pictures.Last edited by Chris T.; 05-07-2014 at 10:29 AM.TOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
