Hello all!So, I have a weld test tomorrow which I know will consist of horizontal and vertical T-joints.  I was at the welding lab at a local community college today trying to brush up on my dual shield when I noticed that almost every time I was doing your regular old horizontal T joint, my first pass would look bad because the bottom of the bead would not wash in properly, while the top of the bead would wash in perfectly.  The bottom of the bead would look kind of squiggly and cold.  You could see space between my bead and the plate.  What's going on here?  I did a lot of trial and error, but nothing seemed to fix the issue for me.Thanks very much in advance, I really need to do well tomorrow
Reply:I would say your gun angle is off. Point the gun more towards the bottom plate.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Great suggestion, much appreciated!  Think of anything else to keep an eye on?  Could settings possibly cause an issue like this as well, or is gun angle the sole culprit in your experience?
Reply:Without pictures I really can’t help much. My crystal ball is out of order right now.I think this was .045“ dual shield, does it look anything like your? Reply:Yes, very similar!  My bottom edge was more inconsistent and cold looking than that one, but I think I can see some symptoms of what was going on with me happening on the bottom toe of that weld
Reply:Maybe try turning your voltage up just a touch, to get the puddle to wet out some.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:1. Make sure that you aren't trying to put too big of a weld in a single pass. I can make a 5/16" fillet in 2F position with .045 dualshield but if I try to go any bigger the bead starts to sag and makes the bottom look cold. 2. Make sure the volts and wire speed is in the ballpark. I just ran some the other day to test out a new meter and my settings were 23.5 Volts and somewhere around 280 on the wire speed. 3. Make sure you angles are right. Using to much of a push angle can get you in trouble with dualshield. I use either straight in or 10 degree push or pull.
