Reply:The movement of air caused by the suction from the machine doesn't disturb the shielding gas coverage?  I always thought the fume control units were good for stick welding.

Reply:I just finished my DIY. 750cfm sucked outside. works like a champ and very quiet.I mounted the big fan in the attic and ran flexible duct to the ceiling. Then from there I have a flex duct that I can position with a stand. Works very well. Reply:It's a good plan for a shop. I'd do it for sure.Kinda odd. Since I gave up cigarettes ( tobacco type) several years ago even a grinder screws me up. Flux core makes me wanna puke(the fumes and the system). Years ago I could have sold my kleenex as recyclable. Nothing irritated my lungs. Now ? Fuggedaboudit. Reply:Many of the fume extractors have an electrostatic precipitator.  Basically is a series of wires that are strung across the duct and are charged.  The dust particles are attracted to the wires where they collect.  This way if there is a filter pack in the air stream most of the dirt is collected and dropped into a tray below before reaching the filter and choking it up.  I was amazed at how good a job they do.  Pulling the bottom drawer and cleaning was a messy job.
