I've used 6013, 7014, and 6011 without any real problems, other than lack of skill on my part.  I recently picked up 5 lbs. of 1/8" Washington Alloy 6010 from a LWS.  Running at various amperages from cold to way too hot, it just randomly goes out as I'm whipping and pausing my way across a joint.  I'm running DCEP on a Thermal Arc Predator.  I can burn through stick after stick of 6011, no problem, but the 6010 just isn't working.  It re-strikes easily, and I can continue, and it may or may not go out again farther along. What gives?

Reply:Do you have a good ground ???  Boy, with 6010 you should be able to long arc it without breaking the arc. Can you try that rod on another machine ?
Reply:I don't have another machine handy that will run it.  I'm grounded to the table, which has been adequate for all the other rods I mentioned.  I'll try clamping directly to the work piece.
Reply:Some times 6010 can be a PITA! Take a small hand full and recondition them. Let air dry for a day or two, then try them again. Generally after a bath, and air dry they work great! Reply:Stiff arc setting is what you want if you have it. I only use Lincoln 5P+ 6010.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720

Reply:I picked up some Hobart Pipemaster 60, and it seems to run better.  I'm still having some troubles, this rod seems to be very sensitive to arc length, moreso than 6011.

Reply:No, just controls for amperage and polarity.
Reply:a quick google search seems to indicate it is a known fault/problem with those machines, that was corrected in the PRO model. I am betting they just don't have the OCV for 6010Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:Well, nuts.  I guess I'll have to stick with 6011 for now.

Reply:I tried 2 different Predators... And Despised both of them. The better of the two was the early machine with AC weld output. It was ok (sort of) with 5p 6010, The later DC only with the arc force control and fine tune throttle absolutely sucked. JMO. That DC only machine was a big PITA, took 3 tries to get one that actually had weld output. All in one day, I should have just walked away after the first.
