Hi Folks,as the title says really, as methanol/ethanol is alot harder/expensive to get here, is it ok to use the above to mix Solarflux B? Thanks!
Reply:I'm pretty sure you can. I think methanol evaporates a bit quicker, but denatured alcohol should work since it will still leave the proper coating on the weld seam. I can try it out for you if you buy me the denatured alcohol. 1st on WeldingWeb to have a scrolling sig! Reply:Thanks guys for the fast replies, i actually already have the meths, but before i mixed it with the solarflux and something adverse happened (im not a chemist) i said id ask first. I wonder would the poisonous stuff they add to stop people drinking it cause any dangerous fumes/gas etc compared to isopropyl or pure ethanol?
Reply:Denatured alcohol (aka methylated spirits) is ethyl alcohol (ethanol) that's had a small amount of poisonous methyl alcohol (methanol) added to it. This is done solely so that it will be exempt from liquor taxes. When methanol burns in air it decomposes into CO2 and water vapor so there's no risk of poisonous fumes.
