Hello everyone i am a newbie and don't have a whole lot of "finesse"  welding under my belt. I have had no formal training and some of my questions may be pretty self explanatory but i will ask anyway just to make sure i am thinking correct. One of my biggest problems are welding sheet steal to like 1/8 inch. Do i set my welder for the sheet steal or the 1/8 inch and i am talking like fender steal on a car also how much of a difference does the shielding gas make? Right now iam running a 25-75% mixture.
Reply:You set the machine for the thinner metal. Usually you direct most of the heat at the thicker piece and wash the weld into the thinner one when doing sheetmetal to thicker stuff. 75/25 is the general all purpose gas for that machine. 100% Co2 will get you a bit more penetration at the cost of more spatter, and you will need to get an adapter to use your reg on CO2. Extra penetration is not something you usually want when doing sheetmetal. The machine lists settings for both 75/25 or 100% CO2 under the cover. Other mixes are usually specialty gasses for bigger machines doing spray for example and are not applicable to that machine. The exception would be specialty mixes for doing stainless on smaller migs, or 100% argon for doing alum..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:hey thank alot.
Reply:Be sure to start the puddle at the thicker piece and wet it into the thinner one, You tend to blow holes when you strike your arc on the thinner plate
