Hi posters,I have never.....EVER! welded.I would like a generator)welder for my remote island cabin.I have found an old 1980's Lincoln Weldanpower AC-225/DC 210/6 It has a Onan 2cyl gas engine 15.7HP......it runs and welds and doesn't blow much smoke..... but are there specific tests I could perform on the lincoln before hauling it to the junkyard!Also.......could muffler be upgraded on engine? What is RPM for the generator...Good machine or boat anchor...KevinLast edited by envelopes2007; 12-12-2007 at 10:42 PM.
Reply:Kevin, That's a good, but noisy machine. When the engine finally goes; You can't afford to fix it.Simple basic generator test: While running, plug in two 500w work lights, look for brightnes of the lamps. Listen for smooth steady engine running, with little or no stumbling or hunting, as you turn the lamps off and on.Simple basic welder test: Feel for distinct "clicks" of the large current control. Feel for smooth turning of the smaller one. Clamp jumper cables to the output studs. See if a wire coat-hanger clamped accross the other end of the jumpers heats up.Do all this in front of the seller, to drive the price up! If the engine sounds good, it's probably okay. Can we see pics?Good Luck
Reply:I'm not good at importing pictures.....but try this item on [email protected] would like a diesel welder with generator but who has one of those? Do they make 1800rpm generator and welder in one?if so? where?THX
Reply:I looked at that. It's a Briggs 16 or 18, single cylinder engine, that's better and more noisy too! They've already silenced the exhaust. No cv tap, but so what.Leads and all, that's a deal, really. I have the twin to it, so I hate to see these prices! You should chisel him a hundred on general  principle; but I say take it.

Reply:OK.......so I'll put you down as basically undecided!!I hope that muffler helps.....now if only the b*** will call me back so I can go get on with it!!BTW: what should the coat hanger do? Get warm? or stay COLD?Is there an hour meter on this machine?I gotta learn how to use it yet?Where can I get OM?PleaseLast edited by envelopes2007; 12-13-2007 at 01:09 AM.

Reply:For the price, that's a nice welder generator that should last a long time.As a standby generator, that's a nice machine with welding capability to boot.As a prime (principal) generator, it would be short lived, noisy, and a fuel hog.Forget the coat hanger test. I thought you needed to test a barely running incomplete "basket case". This machine looks complete and ready, except for the battery. Someone with a helmet, and an electrode, should be able to demonstrate that it welds. Take a battery or jumper cables with you.You can probably find an owners manual at Lincoln's site. Actually, You said please. Here's a best guess for an owners manual without knowing your welder's code number: http://content.lincolnelectric.com//.../im/IM242A.pdfShould give you the basics.Again, probably not the best choice for a prime generator. I'm sure the generator proper could take it, but engine life would be short. No small diesel  boat generators -pulled to upgrade- to be had at the marina?Good Luck
Reply:Hi den,I agree 1800rpm diesels are the BEST. Would you believe there is a marine diesel generator on my marina mechanics shop floor .......but turning wrenches is a summer project......its winter time here and my batteries are dead and  freezin'.......gotta get some juice asap! I'll turn wrenches later!!Got an appointment to go see Lincoln next week. (fuuny deal he's leting his niece handle it?)hour meter?smoke?
Reply:Sorry gotta be quick. No hour meter. Look for oily engine. Leaky head gasket. Heavy paint burn around exhaust pipe, popping on deceleration, IE bad valve.Good Luck
Reply:A single cylinder has points and an oil slinger.  An Onan (2 cylinder)has an oil pump and electronic ignition.  They did also come with a twin briggs with two small mufflers.  It was loud!I have an 87 Lincoln.  Weldman power G7 225/210 7,000 watt generator.  It now sits behind my house on the trailer as an emergency generator.  Last year I used it for 4 days. Denrep is right on all counts.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Hi David,Do I need to take a heavy duty trailer to pull it 200 miles!!please, Let me know?BTW: Only one muffler and ".....the points and carb have been cleaned" So, that tell me it is a B&S single cylindr like denreps! right?cheersKevinLast edited by envelopes2007; 12-13-2007 at 10:08 PM.

Reply:IM-308 is the owner's manual in Lincoln's website for the K-1292, which  denotes a Briggs single cylinder 16hp engine. http://content.lincolnelectric.com//...r/im/IM308.pdf K-1326 denotes the 16hp Onan twin cylinder engine. Both put out 6K watts auxiliary power...52 amps @ 120V OR 26 amps @ 240V, or a combination of both to total not more than 6K watts while not welding.  Mine can start the 1.5hp motor or my Hobart meatsaw while powering lights, refrigerator, TV, etc.  The florescent (sp?) lights flickered a litle while the motor started, but that's all.I have the Onan CV model and used flexible exhaust pipe to channel the exhaust into 2 Corvair 'turbo' mufflers I had laying around.  The mint pair of OEM mufflers are collecting dust as they have no baffles at all and are as loud as straight pipes on a Harley!Last edited by 69 chevy; 12-14-2007 at 11:12 AM.WeldingWeb forum--now more sophomoric banter than anything else!
Reply:thanks 69 chevthe pictures look identicalMy machine is still owned by the original owner...never been out of the barn!still has receipt!!Wow 37 years!I figure its worth $500 bucks....so, I'll give it a try?I'll try and chisel down the price!!!BTW: Stay tuned for some incredibly dumb-*** welding questions?......coming to a forum near you!thanks to all who contributed to this thread.(denrep, david, 69 chev) you arre all good guys in my books!!
Reply:Something?!?!? caused a widespread power outage last night at about 9:30.  I can do without the TV, computer or opening the fridge.  But I MUST have my home's hot water boiler's circulator pump operate 24\7 or else it turns to steam and blows the pressure relief.  (Think 3 Mile Island.)  I fired up my Weldanpower for more than 7 hours, continuously.  I disconnect from the power pole, then backfeed into the fuse panel.  There's nothing else like being a beacon in the emptiness of darkness.  And cold.  The one thing about this power plant that I have disliked from day one, is that it runs at full speed even when the load is as low as 1.5A for the little circulating pump.  So, at $3.00 a gallon for 87 octane fuel, I burned $15.00 worth in 7 hours.  Not really cost effective for the long haul, but quite satisfactory in emergencies. This Lincoln welder has been a godsend since the mid-80's.  I hope it continues for another 20 years.Last edited by 69 chevy; 12-17-2007 at 10:38 AM.WeldingWeb forum--now more sophomoric banter than anything else!
