Reply:I have a sixteen pounder that I installed a 1 1/4" steel handle on probably twenty years ago.  I named her "mamacita".    She's done a ton of work over the years.However, on yours, did you bore a hole for the handle to pass into before you welded it up?life is good
Reply:Is the head or tips hardened steel, I'd think it would shoot shrapnel off after a good hit on solid concrete?

Reply:Yeah I wish I could've bored a hole in before welding but it's some pretty hard stuff. And I don't have the equipment to handle that task. As for it sending shrapnel flying it is a drill bit made for a very large hammer drill (300 lbs of so)that was boring blue granite. As for vibration yes! and lots of it I plan on padding the handle somehow. The main use for it will be breaking concrete cookies left by a pump truck. I'm not sure of the weight but I will find out. Reply:Yeah!  No way I could swing something like that at my current age and shape.When I was in my late 20s, I sold firewood as a side line.  Too poor and cheap to afford a log splitter then, so I came up with an idea to fabricate me a splitting maul hammer.I made the wedge shaped striking head out of 5 pieces of 5/16" thick steel plate so it was hollow inside.I welded it up so that it was 2 Vee shaped pieces welded to 2 rectangle pieces so it had the wedge shape.  The back side of the striking head formed a square opening, so I welded a square plate of steel to close that off, did that as the last thing.I had a piece of bulldozer track pad and cut a "knife edge" out of that and welded it to the pointy end of the wedge.I had some kind of 1" shaft out of some factory machine that I welded on for the handle.I filled the cavity 3/4 full of 1" pieces of lead tire weights before I welded the square end cap on to close up the cavity.The idea behind the pieces of wheel weights was that it should make it act like a dead blow hammer, and add a bit of mass to the head.It was a bad boy, but it also gave the Monday feeling.I never could decide if the lead shot enhanced anything about how it worked, but it worked..........the hell out of you.
Reply:Are those carbide buttons in/on the end there? If so those won't hold up real well if you ever manage to get a good swing on it. I had a 16 pounder years ago. Loaned it to a guy busting up a sidewalk and told him to dump it in the gulley with his last load.  I had found it years earlier out in the brush at an old old subdivision site.
