Pulled a load of hay out of Bixby today. I wanted to see how it would behave when loaded to the design limit (7000gvw)I scaled it at a local gravel pit, and the axle weight on the trailer was 6700#. Pretty darn close to it's rated capacity.I then dropped the jack leg, and raised the tongue a bit off the ball with the tongue scale under the pad. This gives a real close approximation of the actual weight resting on the ball.6700 axle weight + 850 tongue weight = 7550# GVWPayload figures out to 7550 - 2400 (empty weight)= 5150#This points out the importance of "transfer weight". The truck carries part of the load on the hitch, otherwise the trailer would be overloaded. It also points out the variance in hay bale weights. The guys that sold these to me swore that they were 1000lbs. I've been around this stuff long enough to know that it's rare that a 4x5 bale weighs 1000lbs. Otherwise I wouldn't have loaded 6 bales on the trailerSo anyhoooo............nothing dropped off, nothing cracked, and the hitch on the truck (a small point of controversy when I built it) seems to have survived"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Looks good. But, I do want to point out to others... Now, this is going to depend on how your state runs things but "here" in PA if your trailer is not combination registered to your truck, you cannot go over the GVWR of the trailer and of course any trailer over 10K must be a combo deal anyways. But this means on those light trailers, if it is 7000 lbs gvwr, that means if they unhook it from the truck it, sitting on the jack and tires, it cannot be over 7000. You are allowed the weight transfer to vehicle if registered as a combo though and are limited by overall combo registration and axle ratings. So, "here" that is not a legal setup without a combo registration as the trailer is over it's GVWR. That said, I would roll with it anyways.
Reply:No doubt some states have weight laws that just leave you wondering or scratching your head and I'd love to see that "non-combo" trailer pull itself down the road. Really nice job Samm. Reply:That pressue guage sounds like a great idea for a hydraulic jack. It would let most people know how much they are lifting / overloading. I wonder why they arent in all jacks or at least set up for it as an option.Miller thunderbolt 250Decastar 135ERecovering tool-o-holic ESAB OAI have been interested or involved in Electrical, Fire Alarm, Auto, Marine, Welding, Electronics ETC to name a just a few. Reply:Sam you could have fit one more bale on the bed of the truck and two more on top of the trailer... LOL That's how they do it around here.
