Good ac rod for vertical

Running a Lincoln tombstone ac225, I've always used 6013 or 6011 but I'm wondering if there is something that I could run that would improve my vertical welding. I can weld really well in the horizontal position but I absolutely suck welding vertically, both traveling up and down and left to right. Was wondering if there is an "easier" rod for this. Btw I'm just a halfa$$ed hobby/farm welder that learned in "ag" class at 13 years old. :-)Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Reply:A lot of guys can do a fair job flat and horizontal because they can get away with running timing patterns. That does NOT work in vertical. To do vertical well you 1st must learn to read the puddle and manipulate it. As Dave said, post up picts with settings and material thickness so we can see you issues, and we'll give you some suggestions on how to improve. My guess is you haven't learned to read the puddle yet.As far as rods, there's no "magic" rod that will make a poor welder do vertical well. I like how 7014 runs over say 6013 or 6011, but any of the three will work just fine. 7018 is another option, but not all AC machines will run it well. If it will run nice, I'd put it right up there with 7014 as one of my favorite rods to run in vertical..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:As usual, DSW is right on. There is no magic rod that can make you put in a nice vertical up stick weld. You use the same rods to weld vertical up as you do flat (except for a 7024 type rod). You just haven't developed the skills to weld vertical up yet. It is nothing like welding flat with stick. Reply:Try 7014 downhill keep a tight arc, literally dragging it downhill.   Don't let the slag fool you.  The slag will run and drip but the weld underneath will be flat and smooth like cream cheese spread on a bagel.  You might have to play with your speed, but after your 3rd electrode max, you'll figure it out and see a beautiful weld appear when chipping the slag.  I'd almost guarantee that the slag will peal off by itself. 7014 will be your new favorite electrode and you should get that instant gratifying feeling out of your system.
