Reply:Airgas is pretty reliable. For a 300 cf tank, you can reliably count on it being somewhere between $75 and $240I guess it varies depending on how their "hookers and blow" fund is holding up.

Reply:45 bux for a 120 CFH tank. 60 dollar a year tank rental. Company only refills their own rental tanks. If you refill at least three times a year, you are ahead rather than owning your own tank. Camcarb.

Reply:That's an incredible price! I gotta start looking around....When I started out in business, in 1986, I signed on with ABCO Welding Supply. They were a family owned business, and I have a ton of very fond memories with them. They had great service, the prices were fair, and they made the small guy feel like they were somebody.Over time, they grew, and ended up with about 6 or 7 stores. Then, they were bought out by Airgas. For convenience, I just stayed on with them. My experiences have not been so great, since the take over.Plus, I'm on the tail end of this business, more or less, so to have to start all over with some other new supplier kinda bites the big one....Rich

Reply:Originally Posted by steelsurgeonYou're right. But here's how I feel, at this stage of the game.I've had a good run (30 years), for the most part. This particular supply house is only 15 minutes away from where I live / work, so the convenience is pretty good. I only go through maybe 3-4 tanks of argon a year. I really don't buy a lot from them. A lot of consumable stuff is bought online. My customers (local industrial manufacturers) are great, meaning that when they want something built, I get the job. So, there's no bidding against other fabricators. I have a full-time job teaching pipe welding, so my business ( as of 2010) is just part-time. That said... I stay very busy in my shop, and it is quite profitable. I will keep my shop, even after I retire from teaching. There are other reasons why I don't feel like shopping around, but the bottom line is.....I'm tired! (lazy, whatever you want to call it...). So basically, I'm my own worst enemy...The only other thing that I might consider is that a new Praxair just opened up down the street from my local Airgas. I guess I could check in with them for pricing.Other than that, I will stay put, and just charge my customers accordingly.Rich$46 for 80cf from Arc3 Gases (formerly Arcet) in Richmond, VA.HTP Invertig 221Hypertherm Powermax30 XPPlus other stuff

Reply:That's a decent amount of inert gas! Are you a 1-man shop, or do you have a crew of welders? I'm guessing by your arsenal of welding machines that you do not weld alone....You use more in one month, then I use in a whole year! Of course, I'm one guy, very part-time...Rich
