Doing a sched 40 4 inch ss pipe in school at the moment on 6g...2 questions..1.. how do you guys like to tack your pipe..bridge tacks, bullets, full pen tacks?2...when putting in the root..whats the best way to put in a nice solid root...keyhole and dab or lay wire?any other advice when welding stainless steel would be much appreciated...
Reply:I always do bridge tacks and cut them out as I progress around the pipe. That way i know I don't have 4+ parts of my root that didn't get a good back purge. On carbon tig I do full pen. Quickly dabbing can increase the "wetting" of the puddle. I use this on the bottom of the pipe if I am to cold on amps or my pipe just doesn't have enough heat in it. Normally on a SS root I keyhole and dab my root. It seems to achieve better tie in's and just better penetration on the root.Local 83
Reply:Oh and I am super big into cleaning my wire and pipe with acetone. It reduces the heat tint inside of the pipe and outside. On new construction the procedure and quality is usually kept pretty high when welding reactive alloys. On change outs and shut downs the quality is sacrificed for speed to a point. Now I don't mean not getting full pen or having inclusions in the welded joint. But more of procedure allowing heat tint. This is because the pipe you are throwing in is already scheduled to be replace in a year or two. And with purging, a higher flow rate does not equal a better purge. Some welders have their torch and back purge cranked up so high it creates turbulence that brings air into the pipe or torch purge. Small purge hoses raise the pressure of the purge to flow the same amount of argon. The pressure causes turbulence. Having larger purge hoses will lower the pressure and velocity coming out of the hose and will give the argon a more laminar flow. Just something to think about if you experience purge problems.Local 83
Reply:I purge and full pen 12, 6 and 3 o'clock.  I leave 9 out to run right up the side bottom to top. Slightly wider than 1/8A" to float/ back feed 1/8" wire.Sent from my SGH-M919 using TapatalkLong after the price is forgotten, the quality will remain. Both of my Poppy's 1954 Short Hoods -Third generation to weld with it and teaching a fourthSA 2## - Bought and sold more than I can remember or care to list, 8 in the shop right now
