Probably can tell I am a little excited.  I picked up a very nice conditioned Southbend 9" lathe from the local Craigslist today.  After calling and emailing a number of people over the past several months, I finally connected with a seller that was real and still had one available.  It came with a pile of extra gears, cutters, live center, drill chuck and some other things.  I am very happy.  I am looking forward to machining some custom parts for a Harley Davidson bobber I am building right now. Here is the best photo I have of it right now.  I got it home and managed to build a temporary stand for it so I could get it out of the truck.  Just as I was pulling out of the p/u and onto the stand, it started to pour down rain.  The garage is too small to get a decent pic right now.Oh, did I mentioned I am !!!
Reply:Well done!  I also have a 9" South Bend lathe and I am slowly learning how to make it do what I want.  They are great ways to blow about 5 hours making a tiny little part.Miller Syncrowave 350Millermatic 252/ 30A spoolgunMiller Bobcat 225g w/ 3545 spoolgunLincoln PowerArc4000Lincoln 175 Mig  Lincoln 135 Mig Everlast 250EX TigCentury ac/dc 230 amp stickVictor O/AHypertherm 1000 plasma

Reply:Now to figure out where to buy and what to buy as far as tooling.  The first project I want to do are the cast Al lower fork legs.  I shaved off the mounting bosses for the front fenders and reflectors by hand.  Now I want to smooth and true the cylinders.  The second project is to make some brass spacers for my rear axle and engine mounting bolts.Certainly many more to follow!
Reply:For a start, you will need a Quick Change Tool Post.  That is a huge improvement when you are doing several different things. For inexpensive import (Chinese) tooling, I use CDCO.com.  I order on Friday/Saturday, I receive it by the following Thursday.  Use the online order system, unless you can speak/understand Chinese.  Frank doesn't have very good English & is difficult to understand on the phone.  I had one order that was wrong, had to call him, but he made it right.Otherwise do your shopping.  Lots of tooling on E-Bay & other places.  There might be a few guys on here that will help out too.Oh, search for "How To Run A Lathe, by South Bend".  That is the bible for running a lathe, lots of editions out there.  It really makes no difference which one you get, they are all very good.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:I bought a milling attachment for my atlas 10" and made my own QCTP. Even being small the attachment comes in very very handy! Yes things can be very time consuming on a small lathe but when you can't find the part it is worth the time to make it. I use my lathe for everything! Why just yesterday I put a chunk of rubber on a bolt and turned up a new seal for the coupler on my air hose. I hate when they leak a little air and make constant noise.I can't wait to get a nice 9x48" bridgeport vert mill!
Reply:Mark, I will take a look for a copy of "How to Run a Lathe". I joined the South Bend Yahoo forum and have started to read through the mandatory FAQs. That's a lot of reading!  I also downloaded the Army produced manual for the South Bend 9" and 10" lathes. That should prove very helpful/useful. Its 66 pages long. I will probably need to print that out and stick it in a binder for the workshop. Thanks for the tips on tooling. I hope to pull it out of the garage this afternoon to snap a better photo.
Reply:VPT, would you mind posting a photo of your quick change tool post?
Reply:HiCongrats on the lathe purchase. In your spare time check on youtube and google there is a great amount of info on there about lathes. Many tips. DIY tools, and projects can be found by look around.I could not find an adapter between my new tig torch and the dinse connector so I machined one for it.You will be very happy to have that lathe.Hae funtom Attached Images
Reply:A binder with step by step instructions for common uses is a good idea.  I made one myself by printing off portions of the manual for my mill, lathe, and dro. I put the pages in protective covers and keep the binder close.  I even threw in a tap drill chart.  I will be adding more reference stuff to it as I go.  It's real nice being able to find the information I need quickly.  If a page gets all dirty I just print off a new one.My name's not Jim....
Reply:As promised.  Here a two photos of the South Bend.  I built the stand up using the pieces from another wooden worktable that I had to re-purpose from my shop.  It is designed and built for my table saw.  I need to cut the top shelf and bottom shelf down and fit them to the stand, then transfer the top of the table saw over to the stand.  In the mean time, the lathe will hang out on the stand until I make up a solid base for it.acourtjester-  Nice job on that Dinse connector adaptor.  I am a long way from being there.boostinjim-  I am definitely one who believes in having guides and books available for machines like this.  I keep them around for each of my welders and big machines. What's the general consensus about buying tooling from Grizzly?  I own one of there Extreme Series wood bandsaws and will likely add some other tools to my shop from them.  They are only a couple hour ride from my place.

Reply:Canderso, welcome to the latest tool addiction.  You will get a ton of reading done and find all kinds of neat tools for a southy, the QCTP is almost mandatory, but it makes multiple ops a breeze.  I think I have spent more in tooling than I did on the machines initially.  I always seem to find a tool or clamp or accessory i really "need".  But thats how most of us do it, so welcome to the club, go ahead and give em your credit card numbers now and get it over with...It doesnt hurt too bad once ya get a few really important tools taken care of like calipers and micrometers.  If ya already got that stuff your way ahead in the game and probably have already felt the need for more tools (it's truly an addiction).  Have fun and enjoy the new tool.BobI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?
Reply:We have a whole pile of OLD South Bends at the shop..All flat belt drives. All very precise!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:acourtjester-  I just took the time to watch the vids you posted.  Thanks for sharing them and thanks for putting them together.  I learned a whole lot watching those.  It would appear you have some experience with these things and a wealth of knowledge to contribute to new users like me.  Much appreciated. My son is intrigued by the lathe and as we were watching your second video demonstrating making the jig and cutting a key way, it dawned on him why I bought it.  There was a big light bulb that went on and he replied, " Dad, you can use this to make parts for the motorcycle!"  He's only 10 y.o. so I give him a little extra time to catch on.
Reply:Just to start you off right, the FIRST RULE of using a lathe....NEVER leave the chuck key inserted in the chuck adjusting holes....what a bang that makes when you forget it's in there and turn the lathe on!  (You'll be lucky if it only results in a big wham)  Any time your hand is finished adjusting the chuck, remove the key immediately. Yes, I admit that lesson was learned by me all on my own...Many more lessons will come to you as you use it.  Have fun!Miller Syncrowave 350Millermatic 252/ 30A spoolgunMiller Bobcat 225g w/ 3545 spoolgunLincoln PowerArc4000Lincoln 175 Mig  Lincoln 135 Mig Everlast 250EX TigCentury ac/dc 230 amp stickVictor O/AHypertherm 1000 plasma

Reply:HIJust so record is correct Tubalcain made one of the videos I attached.  And has much more experience then I do, and has many more videos you can look at.  One thing I want to point out with your table the lathe ways must remain level and straight any flexing of the ways will cause you to cut a taper along the horizontal plane.  Like your son said with a lathe you will find new things to make and each one will put a smile on your face.  None of us know it all but it's sure is fun learning new things.  Its like the dawning of a new day.Have funTom
Reply:Some stuff imported from China is ok to run.  I said "SOME STUFF".I get my import tooling from CDCO.com, (www.cdco.com) it's fairly inexpensive and I've found for a starter, it's ok.  I bought a 6" three jaw chuck, an 8" four jaw chuck, backing plates, QCTP & lots of other stuff from Frank.  It's usually best to use the online order form, because if you call him you better be able to understand Chinese.  His English leaves a lot to be desired.Grizzly import tools are probably made in the same factory as these others, your just paying extra for the name.  I'm not saying anything bad about their tools, in fact I was considering purchasing a mill from them.  That said, spend the money on quality components that will make a huge difference in the quality of the part.  Such as inserts, stay away from the import stuff.  My 3 jaw chuck has approx .003 runout 1 foot away from the chuck.  That's about as good as I can get it.  I can dial in the 4 jaw to .000, so for my purposes these work just dandy.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build

Reply:Another thumbs up for ' Tubalcaine' ( not his real name )... I have been subscribed for a while now.... You know he is smart because he also appreciates the old Gravely Two wheeled walking tractors..... LOLWeldandpower Lincoln 225 AC,DC with Briggs 16hp gas engine.WW2 era Miller TIG.thanks again guys.VPT- that is a nice looking QCTP.  Very inspirational.  Someday, perhaps i can become that accomplished.Mark- Thanks for those links.  Looks like I have a good bit more reading to do.  The table was just temporary at the moment, because it was starting to rain and I wanted to get it inside.  I plan to build a metal welding table and it looks like I will just end up building a second stand for the lathe.I found an Aloris CA QCTP on Craigslist locally.  I need to check the numbers to see if it the appropriate size for my lathe.  It comes with 3 tools holders.  I had another score today as well.  Got into work this morning and mentioned to a guy that I just purchased the lathe over the weekend.  He responded by handing me a 6" Di-Arco roller, Model-1.  He said he had no need for it and wanted to get it to someone that might use it.  Then he told me he had a 4' finger brake in his basement that he is thinking of getting rid of in the near future!  He told me he would keep me posted, but I would need to bring a bunch of guys to heft it out of his basement as it weighs close to 400lbs.
Reply:I have been looking around at the various QCTP.  I need to call the seller regarding the Aloris CA above.  In the mean time, I found this one on Amazon for $130.http://www.amazon.com/Quick-Change-T...sr=1-2-catcorrUnfortunately it is made overseas.  Part of me would really hate to start putting foreign made tools and such on this old piece or machinery.  Is that disrespectful to the machine?  Or just part of where we are today?

Reply:Get a bunch of hss tool blanks..They are easy to grind...They cut very nice
Reply:Well, did some damage to the personal finances over the past couple of days.I purchased a QCTP from a2z CNC, got my copy of "How to Run a Lathe", and picked up some tooling from The Little Machine Shop.  I suspect everything will be here by mid next week so I can get started.Mark, I tried using your link for the CDCO.com but keep coming up to some site for the Child Development Center of Oakville.
