my sa 200 runs as fast as if the carb was held wide open. Well i am assuming that the problem is in the governor. My neighbor has a sa he also has a bunch of replacement parts for them. I got a hoof governor from him and I was wondering if there is anything special I need to do to convert. also I would like to know how do i need to keep a watch on the timing as I put this thing back together. I am planning on doing this in the next week so any advice would be appriciated.
Reply:Either governor does the same job. The engine's overspeed does not necessarily sound like governor problem. Break connection from carb to governor and crank engine with hand on throttle - slowly increase speed and see if arm moves toward carb. If it does, gov is fine. weldersales
Reply:I agree, very unlikely it's the governor. Do as weldersales says before you pull the governor.
Reply:While not real common, it absolutely is possible for a mechanical governor to fail.If the machine suddenly runs wild and the linkage and springs are still connected, there is a very good possibility of an internal problem in the governor assembly. Mechanical things can and do wear out.
Reply:ok well my machine will idle down and when I strike an arc it runs wild. all the linkages are hooked up. It was like this when I got it and posted on here and was told my govner was wore out. I am still assuming thats it but what else would you guys look for. And what all is involed in putting a new govnor on as far as timing goes.
Reply:There is no timing to worry about, it is just a gear drive governor. After you take it out you will see where the fly weights are and how it works. you may be able to swap some parts and be good to go. I've done this before.Once it is back in place, set the high idle and sensitivity and you are done.
Reply:No, if you have a magneto, you will upset the timing by removing the governor. I really think we are at the horse stage here. Before going to the cart, why not determine if your governor works? If you do decide to remove governor, and you do have mag, remove mag only, then rotate engine until timing marks on cam gear appear in mag hole. Then when you re-install gov, mesh timing marks and you will be good to go. weldersales
Reply:Okay WS, You caught me in an insomniatic brain fart. Thank you. I would hate to pass off bad information. I was thinking of the 6cyl with a distributor. With a mag driven off the gear, it does take a little effort.Get #4 at TDC compression and keep track of your match marks on the gears.Maybe you have some more input for this guy so he can get going.
Reply:I would check to see if the linkage was connected right. I have seen a few over the years that had the arm on the throttle shaft pointing down. the governor tries to close the throttle plate but with the arm on upside down it pushes it wide open instead.
Reply:I have the continental overhaul E manual that has all your sey up info as well trouble shooting. just checked and it has timing set, governor rebuild, trouble shooting and timing with or without timing light. give me your email and I'll send it to you. Its 94 pages. anyone with a continental engine should have one.
Reply:You will have a punch marks you need to line up. Here is a link to timing your mag to the engine:http://www.billswelderrepair.com/magneto-timing.html
Reply:alright guys now i feel kinda slow. I printed out a carb linkage and governor guide and the bracket that holds the control rod to the govn on the carbarater was upside down Ive been looking for a govn for a few months now and all i had to do was flip a d@#$ bracket over. well thanks for all the info. now to get the old thing painted.
