Hello all,Newbie here but long story short, i want to weld an aluminum frame 1/8" thick 1" t6061 square tubing to be exact. I have a hobart 140 and it looked like some people have been able to add the hobart spoolrunner100, watched a video on youtube and understood what they are doing but i was wondering if this was possible and where i would find those parts?thanks all!
Reply:To do good welds on 1/8" alum you need at least a 220v mig machine in the 180 amp class. Even then you will max out voltage and just about wire feed to do 1/8". Small 110v migs really aren't designed to do alum. They simply don't get enough power from a standard wall socket to be able to weld much. 14ga-3/32" is a possibility, if the machine is maxed, but the zone between too hot and too cold is knife edge thin. You have almost no room to make the minute kinds of adjustments you need to be able to do to make this successful.Feel free to buy the spoolgun and squirt metal at your alum project, but don't have high hopes of success. Alum is a great heat sink and requires a lot more output to weld well than steel does..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Just because the squirt metal at something doesn't make it "welded" There was a good example here not that long ago of alum "welds" on a boat, that weren't. Lots of metal globbed on the pieces simply to stick them together but welded they were not.Mig is notorious for making "pretty" welds with little or no penetration. Most people who post stuff up on youtube wouldn't know a good weld from a bad one.I've seen some guys try and go super slow and pile on tons of weld and try and compensate for the fact the machine doesn't have enough power to make good welds. All they really do is make a big mess and the alum now has gotten so hot it's anealed and lost most of it's strength. Same goes with those who think preheat is the magic solution to an undersized machine..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:OP going to get his nuts stomped on! Pulls out the popcorn .  The more appropriate question would be is why the phuck do these companies make spool guns for 110v welders if they're supposedly worthless for anything?
