As the title implies I have been teaching myself to weld in the 3 and 4g positions 3/8 plate double bevel 1/8 root and 1/16 land. Machine is a Lincoln 255 power mig 75/25 argon/co2 mix gas with Er70s-6 hardwire and Lincoln ultracore or dual shield fluxcore as I hear it called on here a lot. Settings I have found best for mig are 3g 18.4 volts and 280 ipm  and 4g 16.8 volts and 180 ipm with the fluxcore I have been running both 3&4g at 22.6 volts and 220 ipm. One problem I think I am having is my root pass on 3g mig and the mig stringer for 4g fluxcore is a bit concaved.Biggest problem is I have nobody at my shop who knows enough to tell me if im doing it right or wrong, I have been with the same company 10 years and I know how to weld but have never taken any weld tests except a 1g 1" plate x-ray test. Also is this the most common form of the 3/4g test? I have seen a few that say all fluxcore but I thought you always did a mig stringer then the fluxcore that and some say downhill mig stringer which is what I have been doing but I have read some people want the mig stringer uphill on the 3g which I cant get the hang of. Any help would be much appreciated. Order of pics is 3 then 4g mig 3 then 4g fluxcore. Attached Images
Reply:To really do well on 3G uphill and 4G you need to be able to read the puddle. I'm not sure I'm seeing that in those picts. Many guys get by flat/horizontal doing what I refer to as "timing patterns" rather than reading the puddle. That seldom works uphill or overhead.Show me your root pass and subsequent layers. Voltage in mig sounds close assuming .035 wire. FC I'll let others help you with as I don't do that much.I'm betting if I see the root and fill passes I'll see the typical issues most have because they aren't reading the puddle running uphill. As far as uphill/downhill, if you can read the puddle and run vert up, vert down is cake..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:I think you’re running a little to cold, and taken to big of steps up. Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Thanks for the input guys, mig is .035 and fc is .045. DSW I think I know what you are saying, basing the speed travel on the puddle instead of just picking a speed and sticking with it. 99.9% of what we weld is done flat and I learned how to weld on the job so no schooling on the vert and overhead welding.
